They've said on further inspection there's nowt wrong with the valves, they are convinced that the new chain kit will sort it.  If I do have to take it back then i'll be asking for the warranty to be extended for sure.  Fingers crossed they'll just give me my pennies back.

You are entitled to have an engine that is fit for purpose and as described in the advert. Do you still have a copy of the advert? If they return the engine to you as it should have been then great. If they return it and it's not fit for purpose or as described then you reject it again. But this time you have given them the opportunity to make good the engine. So this time you have stronger grounds to ask for you money back for the reasons I've said. Keep going Ali. It sucks balls but we're all here to help and support you with this :-)

Maybe a dumb thought, so please go easy one me. If they are happy enough to give you the engine back "working", can they set it up on a bench or something? give you a call to bob down and then fire it up so you can see and hear it running, then you sort out taking it home with you with the knowledge it does indeed run. They put you out in time fitting it, trying to sort it, sending it back etc. so surely must be able to understand you don't want to do all that to find out it's still a duff one. Just trying to save you some time, if it is possible.

That would be sensible yes.  Unfortunately though I can't bob down as they are about 60 miles away and i'm currently using the bus to get around!  I'll ask them tomorrow if they say no refund,  and see if someone local would mind popping in for me.

ask them to prove the compression is good before it leaves their place or give you a refund. Minimum is 12 Bar and maximum 15 Bar.

All they have to do is fit a starter motor and use some jump leads with a compression tester, if they realise you know how to test it in front of them they might decide to stop bullshitting you

ps: highly unlikely the valves are not bent

Jumped chain = bent valves (I'd be surprised if the guides were OK too)

Can any of us call to see the thing running, where about is the breakers. I would be well happy to call in and have a "chat" with them if its near me.

I regret my opinion is not favourable.  An engine will still run with a loose chain and they would have to strip the head to check the valves.  You clearly have not been sold what you paid for and it is unreasonable to expect you to bear the expense of fitting again to ascertain whether their 'repair' has worked.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, I'm pushing to get my money back as i'm not really comfortable putting the engine in my car, i'd be no better off than I was before.

Gordon and Neil, thanks for the offer but they are out Blackburn/Burnley way which is a fair whack from both of you. I'll see what today brings, and if it comes to it i'll put a .org plea out for someone local with a compression tester.  You never know, someone might be heading over to Phoenix next week or something.

I don't think so, would you need it quickly?  I'd like to keep hold of my old engine until my car is sorted, just in case I need any bits off it.
