I've had a look at some Astra's/Vectras, but for the money I've got they've all got a billion miles on.

I should have my pennies back tomorrow, if I can find a suitable engine i'll try and get it delivered for the weekend.

Spin the wheel as to the health of my engine...but it does start and run. Thats a shame about the loss of carriage Ali. Im sure your luck will be better 2nd time round.

Glad to see they gave you your money back for the engine, you probably could chase some of the carriage, but as you say...nightmare and hassle I'll keep an eye/ear out for any engines or complete useable sheds with Z22SE inside (du du dum dum!)

Round 2:

I collected a 65k engine and gearbox at the weekend, and have a new chain kit to go on it. Total £850. It's going in this week I think, so fingers crossed i'll have a running car by the weekend :)

If all goes to plan, i'll be stripping my old engine and selling the other gearbox I bought, which hopefully should recoup some of the costs.

OK so time to update!!

After engine #2 went back to the breakers and I got my partial refund, I did what I should have just done to start with and bought an engine and gearbox off ElizP.  It's from VX Boyds old car (written off), it's done 65k, has FSH and I have the service book.  I had a new timing chain kit fitted, and a new clutch, because I thought doing both should save me any hassle for the foreseeable.

I didn't have the time or motivation to try fitting this engine, so I got a friends garage to fit it and I collected it a few weeks ago.  On the 11 mile drive home it felt like a different car, the engine runs perfectly with no rattles, the exhaust note sounds better and gear changes are a lot smoother.  It drove fantastically well, much like I remember from years ago.

Parked it up on the drive, ran inside like a giddy idiot to get my house mates out to look, went back out and the fecking thing wouldn't start.......  On further inspection I had left the loom hanging inside the wheel arch (the liners were at home) and the tyre had chewed through the coating of the loom and fried something, no broken wires though thankfully :beat:

I've spent the last few weekends checking and cleaning connectors, checking earth points, battery connections etc etc and after reading loads of threads on here bought a new starter relay (£20 Christopher Neil).  It arrived today, et voila!  Brum lives!!   I've been back out a few times since just to make sure it still starts lol.

I'm going to finish putting it back together this weekend so it'll go for it's MOT on Monday and then, fingers crossed, i'm officially no longer a bus w4nker!

Just want to say a big thanks to JohnTurbo for pitching up at mine and helping take out the old engine and fitting engine #2 (even though that was fruitless lol), FLD and Nelly for the loan of bits I needed, ElizP for helping me at such short notice to sort my awesome new engine and Duncan for ferrying bits round for me (and for standing by the side of the motorway for 4 hours with me while I waited for a flat bed :D)  Thanks also to everyone else who's offered help or advice. It's been 3 months in total now so i'm going to be thrilled to back on the road next week!

:groupjump:
