It was only without a battery overnight so don't think it's that.  I do think the battery will have drained a lot with all the attempts to start it yesterday, which might not be helping things now.

The car can't forget chips with the battery disconnected..

It's very unlikely but not impossible. Wouldn't be top of my list of things to check, but if there's an opcom around i'd have a look just to try to rule it out.

I have just got back from another non-starting vx220 (also after an engine swap), the crank sensor wasn't plugged in

same symptoms as Ali's, fuel pressure etc, just not starting, NO ecu codes either , once the crank sensor was plugged in it started first press of the button

That's the first thing i'm going to check when i get home from work tonight.  If it's that, i'm going to do a little dance on my driveway!

We had a small oil escaping incident yesterday from the oil filter housing, so i'm going to double check it's not got into the plug too.

Once it is running keep a close eye for oil leaks around the filter housing, oil hoses and the driveshaft seals in the gearbox.  The last thing I'd want to see is another swap!

Fab thanks Neil, I know I definitely took the old coilpack capacitor off and put it on the new engine.  I did that yesterday whilst troubleshooting.

Crank sensor it top on the hit list, that makes it much easier to find, thank you thumbsup

thankfully not, however I do remember someone managed to plug the water temp sensor loom into the crank sensor during a DIY sc conversion, took a while for us to figure that out

But on a standard loom it's all but impossible to do that :)

Fraid so. Removing starter motor would reveal it if you had to and only two bolts.

This, I still think its a crank sensor problem.

Just wip the starter off and swap sensor off the old engine to remove any question... 5oc + vocky = compelling argument!

This but symptoms do suggest crank sensor, plug or wiring

It's not the crank sensor :( I have a mechanic with me who thinks there's valves stuck somewhere, as there is back pressure in the inlet manifold.
