I've spoken to the supplier this morning, they'd like to speak to the mechanic who fitted the engine :S in order to authorise any warranty repairs. They assure me that it was running well prior to being shipped out to me. It's probably just been stood for a while.
Compression test ASAP, fingers crossed all ok, then go from there.

Hi
Compression test is a good idea
But if that comes back ok, I would suggest checking the relays/fuses in the boot and the fuel cut off switch as those have had me scratching my head a few times in the past

It's not the crank sensor
I have a mechanic with me who thinks there's valves stuck somewhere, as there is back pressure in the inlet manifold.
I've re-read twice and we've jumped immediately to 'kackered engine'. We're a long way from that conclusion yet. Persevere! Engine swaps are never straightforward.
due to mechanic stating back pressure in inlet manifold, which would point to inlet valves leaking, z22se bends inlet valves when the chain jumps

fingers crossed that the diagnosis was wrong and the compression test comes up good.
Don't forget to check the coilpack capacitor was tight, think it was mentioned it might be loose earlier in this thread

It should still start unless the timing is mega out. But if it was that far out there would be nasty noises and bent things... And it would probably stop turning over...
How have you tested for spark? Turning the engine over with a spark plug in the coil pack sparking against the block? If it is firing then this eliminates crank and cam sensors.....
It would still start unless there was pretty much zero compression on all the cylinders. This sounds almost definitely electrical...
Checking for sticky valves you can take the exhaust manifold and the coil pack off (leave spark plugs in), put a strip of paper in front of each exhaust outlet and turn the car over for 10-20 secs. The bits of paper should move if one of them stops moving as much as the others either inlet or exhaust valve on that cylinder is stuck closed.
It won't be stuck open otherwise you'd hear it smashing against the piston

by doing exactly that, all fine.
things we noticed last night:
it is turning over quicker than normal,
if you hold your hand against the exhaust pipe hole, there is a small amount of suction.
will try the valve/paper thing. Ta

There will probably be a bit of suction as the exhaust valves open whilst the piston is on it's way down still...
Quicker than normal suggests lack of compression... buttttt do you have air filter/exhaust etc connected?
Does it even try to catch or just turn over?
