sounds like your starter isn't even coming into contact with the flywheel....

I've turned my engine over many times without spark plugs in (to get oil flowing), and its still a lot more "resistance" than that

edit: does the aux belt/pulley turn when you're cranking like that?

It's turning over quicker because of the lack of compression ......

I've spoken to the supplier this morning, they'd like to speak to the mechanic who fitted the engine :S in order to authorise any warranty repairs.

repairs would be to replace any bent valve and valve guide, the valve guides always crack when the valves bend. You cannot see the tiny cracks until it's been washed in a hot engine wash machine.

Also if the pistons have 'dinks' then the pistons might need replacing too, depends at what rpm the chain jumped at.

Add a head gasket and head bolts - £45 and £25, plus new timing chains - the reason they jump is they are stretched and worn. Some people don't see the point in replacing them :glare:

When my belt let go on my old alfa it sounded like that Valves stuck open as they are bent =no compression and Timing way out Can't believe that was running before they removed it Really got to try a proper compression test to see where things are before you look any further Really sorry and hope we are wrong you really deserve better luck sometime

I am not mecahnically minded at all, far from it, so cannot offer any proper techical advice. However, I had a breakdown years ago and had similar sounding problem. RAC man said lack of compression was problem and squirted a tiny bit of oil down each cylinder and this did the trick - engine fired up and all hunky dorey.

Is this worth trying? (please don't so on my suggestion!)

I'm not spending out to.rebuild the new engine for 2 reasons, 1) I could have just rebuilt my own and 2) I spent every penny I had on the replacement engine so if it's not a free fix I'm fcuked basically. It'll get sorted I'm sure, even if I have to get a different block from the same supplier under warranty..

Hope they just source you a fresher engine swiftly rather than messing about with one that has already had some (possible, but most likely) timing issues. Sucks that you will have to pull the engine again though :( ETA: As Chill said, a full refund would be just dandy

I wouldn't go that far just yet. They have given her a warranty so it's not in their interest so sell knackered engines.

Ali - if you need anything just shout.

So why have they told her that it was a runner when it clearly wasent You have more patience than me Duncan I would be playing fcuk if I had changed a broken engine for a fcuked engine
