I've met two people who have tried both of these and general opinion was that the RSR wasnt quite as good as the 888. However, the notably lower price of the 595RS and its deeper tread depth make it an interesting option as a possible all round tyre. Has anyone else tried both and have experience based opinions, as I'm sure many would like to not keep paying 888 prices now theyre getting higher and higher. Martin S

Ive used r888's as my yearly all rounder now for 3 years and since i only use them now for 6months of the year its not too bad but like you mention the price hike has lead me to consider other options.. Ill be interested to hear whats said.

I have driven an Elise on 888 back to back with my VX on 595's so not exactly a like for like, but I would agree with your statement above, that they arent quite as effective on track.  Saying that though, everyone who has driven my car on track has commented on how impressed they were with the Federals.  A set of 4 595 I think was under £330 when I bought them and thats a huge saving over 888.

I for one will be buying another set of 595, I have been impressed with them in all weathers and seemed to be competent on track, plus good value.

I've ran the 595 this last 12 months and will be trying 888s next year, Didn't have any issues with the 595s but I don't know if I'm losing out on not having 888s so will let you know what I think next year after a few track days, If I was to have a criticism if the 595s it would be getting traction out of slow corners but this could be down to setup and driving style I'm hoping 888s will reduce this time will tell

I have been running the Federal 595 RSR for over a year and Toyo 888s before that, The only reason I went to the Federals the Rear size Toyos were not available at that time. The Federals have lasted well.In the wet they perform better than the 888s, When pushing hard in the heat the Federal do not hold up as well they let go a lot quicker, I found this out on our trip to Zanzort . If it purely down to cost the Federals are a lot cheaper and they will wear longer, If you are looking for grip then it is the Toyo 888.

My car came on worn 888's and the grip was terrible. I think it was partly due to their age/number of heat cycles. New 595's are a huge improvement. The way I see it is that the 888's cost more, wear out faster and suffer from heat cycling more so overall they'll be more than twice the price but they're only marginally better on a warm dry track. So the real question is what do you want to do with the car? If you're constrained by budget, you may be better spending the cash elsewhere, if not then go for it. Personally I'd rather spend the difference on track time and petrol.

having tried the RS-R rear in 225/45/17 and 235/40/17 , the extra width helps stop the rear sliding and makes it much better for longer runs and overall wear. Might try the 255/40/17 next.

Out of interest did you get the 235/40/17s on standard size rear wheels?

They are a C*nt to fit on a 7.5" width wheel I'd heard.. 235/45/17 fitted no probs though :-)

I'll echo most of the above, I've had several sets of 888's and i'm on my first set of 595's, i've covered about 5k, the rears are on there way to needing replacing and the fronts are still fine.

The 595's are definitely better in standing water, but i'd say on par with the 888's in normal wet conditions.

I paid £328 delivered for 16/17's

One thing add which i don't think has been mentioned, I find the 595's very good when they do let go, and around their/my limits.

Interesting, thanks all.

Of course the other option is the Kumho V70A which I have seen in action and know its great, but think the softs dont last at all so medium would be the choice. Slightly cheAPer than 888's but still notably more than RSR's.

So far £596 for the V70A'S.

I don't think the v70's are comparable to either the 888's or 595's in the wet are they?!? I've never run them but know a few people that have.

If it comes to grip in the dry I reckon the 888's are better (never had RSR's before but gonna get them for my new ATS wheels).

I think a comparrison to R1R's would be more fair since both tires have threadwear of 140 (softness) but the RSR is still about 30% cheaper in price.

With all the reviews Í've seen the RSR's seems like a no-brainer for daily-to-occasionally track-use cars?!

the RS-R fronts seem very durable

I also never like the R888 front tyre , it felt clumsy and imprecise.

On my last Le Mans trackday I switched from half worn down R888 to brand new RSR 595 and was VERY well pleased with them. I liked the extra 'feedback' and 'feel' I got from the 595 compared to R888. Two days later I drove them on Dijon during that massive thunderstorm and as long as they kept temperature performed very well. Only had some issues with the front locking up under hard braking, but never felt 'out of control' when cornering.

If you compare the cost between the two I wont be buying a new set R888 any time soon!

Interesting reading The fronts are brilliant especially braking and turn in (595s) but I'm not convinced by rears especially traction
