It's something they are working on at the minute, trying to make it more accessable for game pad racers. It will never be as good as with a wheel as the FFB is what makes it possible to feel how good the physics are. However the game can be played in any way with whatever assists you want/need to make it work with a game pad.

Anyone else having problems?
Not been on this for a long time as the PC's just been set back up after a house move so tie did a sh*t load of updates at once, however now as soon as I click "start engine" it just sits at a blank screen. Nothing happens unless I hit Carl, alt, del and it says it's suffered from an unexpected error and needs to close. Click ok and it goes back to the menu system?

Cheers Chris, not the same solution as the one solved in that thread I'm afraid (no integrated graphics on my mobo) but will register and post the logs etc, cheers for the link
