Nice vids. That track is so 3D (ie dips + rises) it must add another dimension to the drive, especially that blind 90 degree bend after the main straight - I'm not sure I could commit to flying over that on the hope that nobody was spun out 100 meters further down it!

Nev, you should try Cadwell Park if you think Brands Indy is 3D...It even has a corner called mountain.

Great driving as usual guys...Good to see a standard na driven hard

I had a go in a friend's Radical SR3 yesterday, I only had about 10 laps. OMG It's mind bendingly fast through the corners! I must have been 6+ seconds a lap quicker than in my VX around Combe (well it felt it anyway!). It was SO bumpy!

...That's now go me thinking again!

That's what shedding 300kg and adding a proper downforce pack will do for you. There is no room for them on a track day IMO, the speed differential is just too big.

I'd love a drive in a radical, pleased it lived up to expectations! I didn't realise the base models were so affordable either but as Steve said when driven (properly) on a regular track day they must get frustrating being so much quicker than everything else?

Another video from brands last week. This time with a 100kg of ballast in the passenger seat which seemed to add about 0.5 seconds over a lap but still nippy enough to pass a V6 Exige, R400 and various Elise/Exige's :)

Really enjoying the VX now.

It's really surprising what a difference a passenger makes to the car's balance. What tyres do you use? They weren't enjoying the experience.

Max - I'm still on federal RSR's. They often sound like that on track. I need to get some decent tyres, hopefully ready for Rockingham if I can find stock and get them fitted in time. Mark - looking forward to seeing your new car on track. At least this one won't have to wear a nappy :-p

So... tyres.

I want the Avon ZZR's but they're so much more expensive compared to the RSR's I'm just not sure they're worth the extra (more than double the price). Ultimately, I don't go on track days to get pole position but there is some satisfaction with being quick...

Choices I have with current prices and availability, from cheapest to dearest:

  • Nankang NS2r(180) - £65f/£67r = £264
  • Federal RSR            - £62f/£72r = £267
  • Yokohama AD08r     - £95f/£91r = £374
  • Toyo R1R                 - £104f/£92r = £392
  • Avon ZZR                - £136f/£163r = £600 + delivery (£650?)

Not currently available:

  • Nankang NS2r(120) - NAf/£88r = Fronts not in stock
  • Nankang AR-1         -  NA/£129 = Fronts not yet in production but due imminently
  • Avon DZ03               - £143f/£167 = £621
  • Kumho V70a            - £151f/£176r = £655

I'm leaning towards the AD08r on the basis of this test: http://www.speedhunt...8r-time-attack/

I had the AD08 before and they weren't quite as sticky as the RSR's but the shoulder held up much better to wear and they weren't far behind. The new R version seems to bring them pretty close to a full R tyre but with better longevity and less cost...

I'm interested in opinions!

ZZRs are £628.80 delivered direct from Avon Motorsport.

You're right double the price but won't be 2x as good.

Well since Brexit a lot of the above prices have gone up as the suppliers were based in Europe or stock sourced from outside the UK. Fortunately the best tyres are UK made so remain the same price.. and that's what I've gone for :)

So. The ZZR's are here and if people thought the RSR's are wide then the ZZR's are even bigger. Especially given the front's are only 195 vs the RSR 205's.

Got my ZZRs yesterday too (also replacing RSR).

Snetterton on 3 August, so will see how they compare.

Yep, they're still in the garden at the moment so first proper run will be the trip up to Rockingham.

I'm not sure if the local roundabouts countbforbthe scrubbing in procedure..? Any advice on what 'scrubbing in' means in the real world? I'd assume it means a few gentle laps followed by letting the tyres cool down before giving them a damn good thrashing?

That's crazy, suggests that tyre sizes are not accurate at all...
