^ This.. IIRC, it's 11mm sides and top, and 15 or 18mm at the bottom..Best way is to get a shorter private plate. My regular size 5 digit VXT plate cut down with the minimum 11mm border all round looks spot on size wise and is perfectly legal.

Had a 3/4 plate on the vx for 8 yrs but Cheshire's finest gave me a £60 spot fine in 2012.
Minimum size 5 character plate is surprisingly small - £12 from Halfords.

Buy any size / colour combination / digit “tweaked” plate you desire from http://www.platecreator.com (let’s face it, if you’re going to get nicked for illegal plates at least have what you want till you do!). ALSO buy a set of road legal plates.... Heavy duty Velcro on all (I prefer the marine grade 3M stuff on eBay)... Sexy plates on car, legal plates in boot... Pulled over “just been to a show / had the car photographed for a tuning magazine officer”.... “Forgot to switch back”.... Change plates whilst observed, voila! No fines or producers. Works for me (twice now on the motorway), but then I do live in a rural area where the plod are keener to admire a VX than fuss about plate legalities.

Just leave the plate off and have a full size one in the footwell
Best idea yet!

Had my 3/4 size plate for nearly 10 years now, N22 LAN, standard font and never had any trouble. I did whimp out and put a full size on the last time I went to Anglesey though.
I did drive around for a few weeks without it on and never got pulled.
Oh and the 3/4 plate works on the number plate recognition system at the Euro Tunnel.

I need to order some new plates, I'm going to get a 3/4 size plate for the front but i'm also interested in a narrower rear plate. I've seen one on here and thought it looked good. Can't remember who the owner is but pretty sure the car is red. anyone got any pics?

I'm on my third plate since June :/ The dude at Halfords said as long as you could fit standard size text then a smaller plate was still cool with the law
Amazingly for the monkeys at Halfrauds that sounds about right. DVLA states the following:
For vehicles with new or replacement number plates fitted from 1 September 2001, registration numbers can no longer be shown over three lines (unless the vehicle was first registered before 1 January 1973). Also, the letters and numbers (characters) on number plates bought since 1 September 2001 will need to meet the following standards.
- Characters must be 79mm tall
- Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
- The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
- The space between characters must be 11mm
- The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
- The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
- Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm

I just keep a full size plate in the boot
my small plate lives upside down on the dash.
Yeah I'm sorry about that it fell off officer.
oh is it too small ???
what about this one I have in the boot ?
I'm very sorry about that
Should I put the big one on the dash?
as I can't fix this to the front with out some strong velcro .
yes officer i'll get that sorted asap .
Good afternoon to you
