Can't you fit rear subframe and get on with getting it back on its wheels ? Fuel pipes to fit swirl pot to fit ? Try Ironing the gold sheet might get a flatter finish ;-)

I did originally suggest this to MB but he seems to think this is the easiest/best way? And no ironing...

No removable panel in the bulkhead for ease of supercharger removal/refitting? :o

Ahh, the inspection panel. I like the one that Simon put into his for access to the turbo. I hope to recreate that at some point.

I'm intrigued what is it you are talking about easiest/best way to fit with subframe off?

You wont be saying that the first time you want to remove the inlet manifold to check the Laminova's,

Yes loades you don't need a panel with the standered bulkhead removed :-)

I'll bow to Matt's superior knowledge but if I were doing it I would certainly want the subframe on before the engine, the chassis was unstable enough just fitting the heater. I wouldn't want to offer a engine up to the chassis as it is.

I guess it saves hoisting it up in there air  But slows you down for the suspension / subframe rebuild or have you taken the joe approach and just can't be arsed now? :lol If it was me I would bolt subframe on, like what fez says

might be fine to fit a Lotus engine with the subframe removed but the vx220 needs the side mounts removed to bolt up the subframe, so a stupid idea  :ffs:

Hmmmm, guess I know what I'm doing when I get back from Scotland after the weekend then. At least subframe is ready, new shims and bolts ready for mounting point and all the suspension wishbones and hubs are built up waiting...

I don't understand what the benefit of fitting without the subframe would be, other than not having to lift the crane quite as high??

So it's to allow better/easier access for me to work out where to run fuel lines etc, rather than reaching and bending over the subframe I can just lean over the engine itself.

Speaking to Vocky about this, as I will be removing my subframe to reshim it when I replace my engine, he went into a bit more detail:

You can only attach the front engine mount to the engine, the side mounts cannot be attached as the subframe bolts need to be added before.

Because of this, you need to find a way to offer up the subframe with the engine crane still supporting the engine.

In short, it's much more difficult to fit an engine without the subframe attached. Most fuel lines can be run prior to offering up the engine anyway, so there's little gain to be had.
