This is also the way I was planning on going this winter but do you think it's worth using a catch tank ? 🍻🎱

Difficult to say, as in my case it does not seem to be actually doing anything atm.

It's still staying in there though :)

My car is due a oil change soon and Ive been running 10w50 oil for the last few years. I'm also fitting a saab sump so i should have a extra litre of oil to play around with so I'm not sure if I should go a thinner oil or stick with what ive got. Would thicker or thinner oil have any differences with the PCV as I'm still not sure if imshould open it up yet?

used to run Titan Race Pro-S Silkolene Oil 10w50 , then moved to Gulf Competition 10w-60 , but they were both expensive even after opie oils discounts for regular changes so now I use Triple QX SynPlus 5w40 Fully Synthetic , which I get for £12.50 for 5L (car parts for less) and also run it in the Porsche as well which needs 9L.

Haggie, thicker oil will likely help reduce blowby on the piston rings and on the valve stem seals, thus theoretically reducing positive crank case and cam case pressure, so probably worth it. I use 50 grade oil, but might even try some 60 grade next time.

Counter to running thicker viscosities is that the engine was never designed for it, so you'll unduly stress the oil pump and associated chains/belts

I'm no expert but would running thicker oil increase crank pressure Because of the reduced blow by

I think that the best way to have a clean engine is changing oil every little millage. In two years I've driven 13.000km and I changed oil 4 times and the engine is more than clean. I use repsol competition full synthetic 5w40 and it's fine.

Well I now have a saab engine (deep joy) and my car is as covered as Chills was in those pictures.

What is the final conclusion from all this as I cant see how sticking the breather pipe into the inlet of my sc is going to do any good at all.

Do I need to do that and fit some sort of dodgy catch tank in as well. All seems a bit heath robinson to me.

Why not fit a separator with a return pipe?  Most catch cans are literally just a can, a proper separator will make a big difference.

Venting to atmosphere is always the best solution. The only reason modern cars vent back into the inlet is due to legal/emissions restrictions, however this conflict with good combustion because feeding oxygen starved oily air into the inlet track is obviously a bad thing to do.

With it open to atmosphere and your inlet valve blocked of means you can't replace the fresh air that is needed in the crank area?

If you run it vented (like I do as well, hose from the cover to a catchcan with a small breather), you gave an open line from cranckcase to atmosphere. Ait can run both ways depending on pressure.

My interim solution (high tech it isn't)  is going to be sticking the pipe in a big bottle mounted in the engine area just to see how much is actually blowing out. Am only going up to 5000 revs max at them mo, will it get worse at higher revs?

This is what I have too - I don't get any crud out the back of the car but do collect a lot of stinky/oily water in the catch tank which I assume would otherwise have sprayed all over the back of the car.
