Need help with gearbox / drivetrain noise. (Sounds like knackered bearing (or imagine stones being spunn around in and old baked bean tin)

First a little history...

New B207 with Z22SE Crank fitted with piper stage 2 cams balancer delete, Courtenay Light Flywheel and uprated clutch.

Has been fitted to my original 92k gearbox work OK but noisy in under load and lift off.. Came the conclusion either pinion or first motion bearings where shot. So bought a replacement gearbox out of a 34k vx220 fitted and has exactly the same issue although sounded a little worse to cut long story short the same noise.

So decided to take it out and have it refurbished... (All main bearings replaced)  so bunged it all back in again and guess what still have the same noise!!!

Pretty gutted to be honest..

Noise goes when clutch is dipped but is prominent is all gears under load under 2500rpm's over it gets better but does not disappear. Also  hear on high rpm lift off.

So went to gearbox builder and took him out did some tested and he thinks could be down to clutch plate/flywheel. No convinced with this went to see a friend who head mechanic and worked on cars for over 20 years  said could well be the clutch flywheel combo.

Anyway I'm still not convinced and hoping the great .org could help me out as I've have this engine/gearbox in and out 4 effin times now pretty much every weekend since beginning of April .

Has anyone else experienced this kind of noise and know the issue?

Also is anyone around Herts/Bed/Bucks willing to come out for test drive see if they know??

Getting so fed up with it now don't know what to do next.. Close pulling it out again and putting in standard flywheel/clutch but if still does the same it may be can of petrol and a match!!!!

Pleeeeeeeese Help me before I do something I regret!!

Cant help with the diagnostics but I will be changing the gearbox in the race car as it has a knackered 3rd gear selector. You're welcome to it for nothing for parts if you want it. Just about to put the fifth gearbox in!!!!

Cheers fiveoclock. Really not sure what the issue is I would of thought the transmission shop would have noticed if anything was wrong. He did say would strip box with me there and if anything was wrong would fix. foc. Not sure what he would do if nothing was wrong though. Thought about oil as well I'm using GM Transmissions fluid 2.5l

The release bearing on the F23's can make quite a noise if it is partially/fully in contact with the clutch cover forks, however it makes more of a whirling/scraping sound in my experience.

Mine only cost £100 to £125 each though (mind you this is why they keep failing). Although before Rockingham we will be putting in a 4.17 box that has been stripped and properly reconned and that didnt cost me £100!!! I also have a spare 4.17 courtesy of Lee which will be coming to every race meeting. I've done two diffs, a 3rd gear selector and an output shaft bearing!!

I think you should take the advice from the experts unlikely to be the gearbox as it's happening on both boxes, If your confident about the crank being good you have yo look closer at the clutch and flywheel assembly take up the offer of the standard clutches above as it's unlikely to be the flywheel as that just bolts to the crank What clutch have you gone for matt ??

The stones in a bean can noise on lift off is fairly standard.... I've heard that in about 95% of vx's that I've driven/been in. Under load though... Hmm

The Courtenay uprated clutch and their flywheel. All parts where from them. Would really like someone to listen to it before I start pulling it to bits again. Last resort will be putting it bacl to standard flywheel and clutch but may have to.

Mmm it's not what you would call quiet either. If you remember driving your old car Stu it made the same noise but only in 5th and is louder.
