If it grinds when in gear but goes when the clutch is dipped then it is release bearing/clutch assembly for the prime suspect.

The only other thing is thrust bearings but a new engine and rebuilt gearbox leads me to look elsewhere.

Don't think so sounds like cogs meshing badly but I could be wrong.

This may be waaay off but its an idea that would be good to rule out.  If its a noise that disappears when you dip the clutch (ie its there under load) could it be a slight movement of the engine and its one of the moving parts grinding against something?  Might be worth just checking round the drive belt area or checking the side  engine mounts.  Whilst its unlikely its an easy one to check and rule out.

Definitely not drive belts, noise is coming from clutch/gearbox location pretty sure is something to do with the drive train. But thanks.. (Still looking for a VX'er to listen to noise, I can drive it so if anyone is around I can takea drive out. (not miles though just in case!!!)

Apart from the noise, are there any other symptoms? Perhaps just driving it for a bit to see if gets worse, or is the sound so horrible that you instinctively feel like driving round like Miss Daisy ?

Apart from gear chatter on tick over due to cams and light flywheel no other issues. It is drivable but as you say driving it, it sounds horrible. (Sounds a bit like straight cut box)

Sounds like the selector forks grating on gear change , With the box being rebuilt I doubt it .
