Running a SaabB207 brand new. Clutch is new from Courtenays with their flywheel. Am able to move plate springs with firm force.. But thought that was normal.

Sorry to be a pain in the butt, could you give advise on the following. A - When engine on tick over in neutral and foot off the clutch peddle can you hear the noise ? B - When engine on tick over in neutral then press the clutch peddle can you hear the noise ? C - When engine running at 2000rpm in neutral no clutch pressed can you hear the noise ? D - When engine running at 2000pm in neutral press the clutch peddle can you hear the noise ? Then B and D again but then press the clutch peddle on and off several times and does the noise come and go ? Does it get louder or quieter when doing of the above ?

OK I'll get back to you on this as battery flat and currently on charge. But is not the release bearing before you ask.

For me it is No on all the above.

I get the noise as soon as I lift the throttle above 50 mph in fourth and fifth gear.

When the engine is doing the work it is quiet, when the forces is coming from the wheels I get the noise.

Wreelybro After reading this forum in more detail and all was ok before you fitted the engine and clutch change, and you have swopped the gearbox and clutch since fitting the engine to eliminate the noise. So leaves the possible following options that could contribute to you rattle noise, but without hearing your noise and seeing for myself there could be some other underlying causes not related to the clutch assembly. It seems unusual to have a rattle type noise under load when you say the gearbox, clutch, and engine are ok and you have checked drive shaft joints, engine mounts, suspension fixings. 1, Excessive spline movement on the clutch disc to the gearbox input shaft, but if noisy under load not really a cause. 2, Gearbox input shaft bearing to flywheel incorrect size allowing extra movement. 3, Flywheel unbalanced, clutch cover to flywheel holes not central on flywheel. 4, Engine to gearbox fixing, misalignment. (Dowels missing) 5, General noise characteristics of the engine clutch/flywheel set up on the gearbox of which you may have to live with until something obvious comes to light in the future.

Mm m I'm thinking is down to the clutch and flywheel combo atm under load ie engine power noise is far less under load from wheels is when you most hear it. Spline to clutch plate is fine and also clutch go cover. However can not been balanced this is a job over the next couple of months. Take out and balanr whole engine.Dowells are fine and input shaft and bearing have been replaced/checked. As you say may have to live with it.. Thank you for the input. If you are ever around the Milton Keynes area you are welcome for a spin to listen...

A vibrational noise is common in a number of production cars after the flywheel has been lightened.

This will be why your mechanic friends suggested this as a possible cause.

Lightening the flywheel most likely upsets the original Development Engineers calculations for crankshaft torsional dampening.

Is that the reason my guy asked for the crankshaft too when he lightened my OEM flywheel ?

Not as such, but getting it all balanced together is a smart move

I now get a lot of clutch spring noise when coasting , I blame a couple of recent 1/2 gear launches. It could just be the friction plate springs have moved.

Had a nice natter with VX220BOB last night great guy and thanks for the advise, we didn't acutally come to any conclusions but is definatly pointing towards light flywheel and gear harmonics. My Clutch springs are tights but I am able to twist them a few degrees in the plate casing. I'm assuming ths is normal..

I've got the same noise on my tubby. Really hear it when coasting in low gears and especially when everything is hot but you have to listen out for it so it's not very loud. My gearbox is currently away getting refurbished but when I described the noise to the gearbox specialist he said it sounds more like the clutch. Springs are all tight but I can turn them if I try. Some edges are pitted/ chipped slightly as though the springs have rubbed something. YouTube videos show that when the clutch springs have gone you can shake the clutch plate and it sounds like a tambourine but mine are tight. I'm going to take the clutch with me when I collect the box and see what he says as its expensive to change for no reason.

Selector gearboxes in Speke. They have a very good reputation and a friend of mine has already used them in the past.

Picked my box up today and there wasn't a lot wrong with it. I took my clutch with me and the guy took one look at it and said there's your problem. The very edge of the springs are shiny and have the odd tiny chip where the springs have turned. They aren't particularly loose and to my untrained eye I was happy to reuse the clutch. Ill be ordering a new clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing but not sure what to buy yet. I fitted the Helix 4 paddle clutch roughly 8k miles ago so not brilliant at £640 a pop with the bearing.

I know yours was a new clutch Matty but when you were doing your weekly gearbox removal did you try just changing the clutch plate back to the original? Ill let you know if my noise is gone when I get it all back together.

Any news here? A friend of mine was running bastuck flywheel and standard clutch with b207 2.0 and everything fine. Switched to another flywheel from Regelin-performance.de and techniclutch clutch with Sachs cylinder. Had to drill the bolts for the clutch plate. having the same noise now. Relly loud :-(

Mine still makes the same noise after gearbox rebuild, complete new clutch and slave cylinder. That was an expensive exercise! Must be the lightweight p*ss poor balanced flywheel on my car.
