I forgot that turbo clams are reinforced. That explains why my spoiler stays on at high speed. In that case Krusty completely ignore what I told you at Bedford as you have an N/A clam.

Really?

Are you sure?

I thought the only difference between tubby and NA clams, is the boot aperture.

The upper part of tubby clams has a thickener part added making it a fair bit stronger.  Not sure I'd rely on it for a BGW but it is a lot stiffer.

Here's a pic of my internal brace.  Its been a 'make do' fix for 2 years :D.  Must make a proper one.

Do you need internal brassing for the GT4 spoiler?

6 track days completed with speeds of 140 MPH reached quite a few times. I've checked very carefully around the area where the spoiler is mounted and there are no signs of damage. Mind you, I think mine will only give about 30-40 kg's of downforce depending on speed. The spoiler mounts are very wide and I've used enourmous repair washers on the other side to help spread the load. I'm fairly sure I could sit on it and not cause any damage and I weigh 85 kilograms (not that I would, my neighbours might think I'm a bit weird). I suppose it depends on what sort of spoiler you want to fit and how much downforce is required. Anyway, I doubt this matters to the original author of the thread as he has an N/A.

You don't need bracing like the examples above but some people as I did have fitted a precautionary spreader plate directly under the legs onto the roof of the boot. Although I'm sure a lot don't bother and have been absolutely fine just bolted through the clam.

I think the internal fixing of the captive nut on the wing upright is the weakest point

Its not a case of reducing damage to the clam, its about transfering the downforce onto the wheels. If you dont have a brace all that will happen is you will push the clam edge down.

when I push down on my GT4 spoiler it moves the whole clam lower, I have massive spreader plates that take up all the flat area under the wing mounts..

If the GT4 spoiler actuallyy does anything? Then Im sure most of it gets to the wheels.. but being honest I just love the way it looks

any piece of A4 sheet aluminium cut it down to fit per side, should cost less then £4 each side.. fortunately mine come with the spoiler when I bought it.. so I just bolted it all together

A few years back when BGW's were first attached to clams there were a few that had stress cracks in the clam top after a few months.  This was with no spreader or bracing.  I think its wise to put something in.

Got mine from Serious Lotus so not sure if it came with one as its all at the spray shop

I will pop down B&Q and buy an aluminium sheet, then I take it just cut drill some holes to bolt it through

yes, make sure its not too thin as it needs to add redigitady (fcuk knows how you spell that)

once you have one cut to the right shape, you can then use it as a template for the other side, and then again as a template so you drill the holes in the right place...

I let my old man use a hand drill on my clam, I could not do it myself

Here is my solution.

I have added a second rivnut to the subframe so the channel is firmly held in 2 places. I have also stuck the channel to the boot floor so I can remove the clam without having to take the whole wing assembly out. Where the upright comes through the clam is sealed to allow the boot to be used.

Why can't I get the pic to display? Thought I'd followed the instructions. Can admin help?

Your car looked so much better at Silverstone, wingless. Probably also upped your top speed by 10mph as well. :D
