I know the Avons have been used on track by 5 oclock but has anyione been using them as road 'and' track tyres.

Am about to buy a new set of 888's but am contemplating the zzr's, but as I use the 888's as road tyres as well and often through no choice in all weather conditions, am wondered if the Avons may be not so ok in the wet as 888's (I think theyre ok most of the time) and more track orientated than even the 888's?

 

Any comments/thoughts welcome.

My mate has them on his S1 Exige. The tread pattern looks less hardcore than the 888s and he uses it on the road as well as track. They are devastating on track, having had to watch him disappear round Croft and Spa. He swears by them. Not cheap though.

I don't think many have tried them yet on the VX platform Martin but plenty have over on Seloc and they seem happy with it as a road/track tyre.

 

Only a couple of places you can buy them from AFAIK, Avon motorsport direct being the main one.

Martin, I've been thinking in the same direction. At £600 per set the Avons are probably around the same price as 888s

I've got them on my car, done 600 or 700 miles now, I'd only used the AO48's before but the prices for those are too much now. I've changed the suspension at the same time plus a different geo, so can't say if it's just the tyres that are making me smile, certainly a happy bunny at the moment

All r-rated tyres are pretty dreadful on the road with the exception of R1R Toyo... The ZZR however is fantastic on track with great durability.  They do have VERY stiff side walls which compromises the ride on the road, even more so than the A048 but otherwise they are no worse on the road and way better on track.

With running stiffer sidewalls do you run a little less spring rate on track? im sure scuffers said something a while back saying that aswell as the extra grip you also up the spring rates on some slicks is because of different side wall stiffness.

 

Ie stiff wall, softer spring and vise versa

Spring and tyre work as two springs in series and its the total rate of both you are interested in.  I'm currently running the same spring package that I did with ao48's so I would say the optimum isn't that different between the two tyres.

Well from the reviews ive been reading it seems that dunlop dzo3g is the king of the castle for performance, michelin is better but cant get them in my size.

 

Would be really good to see a lap time comparison between tyres, but the issue with that is camber/spring etc need to be set to the tyre to get the best out of it.

 

But then most people dont want them to chase the last few tenths, they want lots of grip but them also to get reasonable life.  how do the zzr compare in terms of life vs grip, would you class them closer to a medium compound yoko in terms of grip/life?

When I did the evening trackday at Snetterton on Wednesday , A guy new  to the VX scene was their with a NA recently purchased , It was shod with a new set of Avon ZZRs  Considering he had a leaking rear shock  these tyres seem to really grip well into the corners.

Compared to the Federal I have the Avons certainly seem the better Tyre.
