Hi,

Since my rear tyres are pretty worn, I’ve been looking for possible replacements.

I've recently found an online store which sells these for a decent price. Unfortunately they cannot give me a DOT-code since they claim that they order their tyres from a subcontractor after a purchase has been made through their webpage.

This information is currently available:

Bridgestone Potenza

RE040 BZ

225/45 R17 90W

Question is; is this enough info to know that I’m getting the right kind of tyre?

As far as I’ve heard, the DOT-code mainly contains production info such as batch number etc.?

Any advice is greatly appreciated...

Dot code gives you the year and week in the year in which the tyre was manufactured.

Mmm,

I almost figured as much, but got slightly doubtful since that wiki-page (which many tyre-threads refer to) claim that it is vital to check the DOT-code for the letters CFE..

Dot code gives you the year and week in the year in which the tyre was manufactured.

But it also tells you if the tyre is VX specific.  However, it is understood the correct rear is no longer manufactured, so you won't receive the correct one anyway.

When I purchased the VX it had non CFE RE040 tyres on these we're replace with CFE tyres. I now have Khumo KU39. Once run in I couldn't tell the difference between any of them.

Cheers,

It's good to know that these will prove to be an acceptable alternative.

Since it's usually quite a hassle to get a refund from these online vendors, I might as well get it right the first time around.

Cant see what difference it makes, plenty of people on here with tyres sat on the their for over 5 years so your new ones wont be older than that or anywhere near it

Worse case is the go a little hard and not as grippy but anything new off the shelf will be within the last 24 months and will not be a problem

The general rule seems to be your tyres are getting knackered after six years, the rubber starts to crack with age and can starts to de laminate, probably ok for your gran to roll down the shops but not great for a sports car driven hard. Get a new elastic band and an old one from the back of the junk draw and stretch them both

Well, that elastic bands solution would probably work splendid for ol' granny, but personally I'd rather take my chances with these new tyres!

Current price is £ 92, through mytyres.co.uk.

It is apparently a large German retailer who have several e-stores throughout Europe.

not great for a sports car driven hard.

The fronts I was using at the national were 10 and 12 years old :o   Went in the bin once home.

OP, Mytyres are fine, I've used them, but try Tyreleader, another German retailer who is winning the price war ATM.

The general rule

Probably written by tyre manufacturers to stimulate sales. These guys can also be competitive on prices with next day delivery from overseas http://www.oponeo.co.uk/

Good job we took it easy  I have had old tyres on and you can see small cracks in the side walls but they still pass the mot ? If you make or sell tyres then you say six years so that probably means they are good for a few more.

Manufacturers warranty their tyres for 5 years against defect. I wonder if it's a coincidence that 6 years is the recommended 'use by'.
