Got breakdown cover... Call them out and say you have a long journey to make tomorrow and need to decide whether you need to book a hire car or not.
The AA did a sniffer test on a previous car of mine for 'that very reason'

Update.
After it seeming more positive, further road test the next day revealed oil appearing in the coolant header tank again. Plus the thermostat had stuck open. Any ideas what could of caused that? Perhaps the oil contamination could've ferked the stat?
I had a sniff test done and that all checked out fine.
So assuming head gasket ok, Next steps are
1. Replace oil cooler
2. Flush system again. Local garage has recommended floor cleaner which apparently the local ex rover place use to flush systems on k series head gasket failures. Seems somewhat severe but opinion was it really works to get oil contamination out and does no damage.
3. Replace thermostat and re-clean header tank.
4. New coolant.

Ok cheers Kieren. Apparently the ex rover place has a stock of the stuff they use. I'll pop in there and ask about it and if they'd flog me some. Btw, I read the TIS guide on replacing the coolant (basically removing lower engine hose and lower connection on a rad hose). I followed this but when I came to refill I reckon I only managed to get about 6L of coolant in. The system is 12L apparently. Anyone have any tips on how to get all the coolant out? Eg it'd be good if you could open a drain point somewhere and run the engine whilst concurrently filling the system from a hose pipe to eventually flush it all through. Maybe remove the front rad hose bleed screw and let it drain out there whilst filling from a hose pipe into the header tank for several minutes? As my stat is stuck open at the moment I wondered if that'd work? Ie the stat will stay open even though I'd be putting cold in. Cheers. These cleaners are normaly Alkaline based so will desovle any oil etc.
