Siphon the coolant out of the tank with a piece of hose and stick it inside the lower outlet pipe to get the level below this.
Easy way to minimize coolant spill.

I changed mine and didn't have to top it up. Take the old one off the bracket, tip it over, pull the pipes off and set it aside on end. Fit the new one and tip in the old coolant. Its not hard.

Last time I just took it off its mounts and tipped the fluid out into a McDonald's cup. Fitted the new one and tipped the coolant back in.
This is the ONLY manly way to do it as you get to have some sort of trip to maccy D's too
