I would like to edit some Hi-8 home video footage (taken at the 'Ring ) on my computer. Anyone know how I can transfer it on to CD-ROM or DV tape or any other format compatible with a Mac? Thanks

Do you have access to a DV video camera? Some of the better ones have analogue video-in ports, eg. Sony do several. That way you could play it straight in, digitised to DV tape and from the DV camera take a Firewire lead to the Mac and edit it in iMovie. From there, if you have the Superdrive (DVD burner), you can use iDVD to burn DVD's. If you've only got a CD-ROM burner, you can still do video if you get the appropriate progs to condense the signal. See MacWorld or MacFormat for such products, for example with Roxio's Toast 5 Titanium, you can create a VCD on a CD-R or CD-RW that will play on home DVD players. If you can't get access to a DV video camera and don't want to upgrade to one, there is an analogue to digital converter. You plug the analogue video signal into it and it sends the digitzal video signal to the Mac. Its called "Dazzle" there is another one too, but the name escapes me at present. Thing is that's all they do and aren't cheap, so better to buy a DV-camera with analogue video-in really if you can. :)

Thanks speedy. I have a Sony digital camera but there is no anologue in. I have burned a few DVD's on my Powerbook so I am pretty familiar with iMovie and iDVD. (Very frustrating no free upgrade to iDVD3 BTW.) I found a company that will convert my old Hi-8 tapes to CD-ROM or MiniDV buth they want 60 quid. The transfer will be a one off so I don't want to buy any hardware to be used only once. Will keep looking!

I reckon your best bet is borrowing a cam with analogue-in if you can at all.

Another possiblity would be to buy the Panasonic DVD video recorder. I have the one with a hard drive, DMR-HS2, and it's phenomenal. This also has an analogue video-in port, so you could record to the hard drive and or burn directly to DVD. I don't know if the cheaper models without the hard drive also have analogue video-in, but all I can say is the time-slip function is brilliant. It gets good reviews everywhere. Only critiscism is the awfully slow-reaction to the remote control. Would be a good buy to solve your problem and add a lot of convenience.

I've got iDVD3 on my new 12"Pb. but not actually tried it yet.

BTW, have you tried using the Safari browser? With both my G4 iMac and the 12", I have encountered difficulties on the VX forum. It logs me in, but then when I post it tells me I'm not logged in. Haven't figured out if it's because of my firewall settings, but have taken to using IE5.2  for this forum and that seems to cause less problems. Would welcome any feedback from a fellow Mac user. :)

I use Safari 1.0 Beta 2 and have never had a problem. Works fine with this Forum (so far!) I will try to find a mate with a suitable camera and if that fails I will just pay the production company. I really want to add some footage to my homepage. Got an 8min 20 sec lap filmed from my R1 behind a 500bhp 911. Wicked! Keep watching it since I re-discovered the tapes a few days ago!
