Ok Ill take some tools along but its not often a car dealer will let a customer or the dealership themselves take apart cars :-/ isn't it kinda unheard of? I know in the private enthusiast selling world its probably easier but still liability if someone is hurt or damage done to car in process

Just saying anywhere would let you look but taking a car apart is a different ball game...it even says on the buyers guide what to look for that the seller private or dealer may not allow or may not themselves take a car apart.

I think there has to be some middle ground on this....

Ask for a 30 day money back guarantee, if the chassis or anything major is fooked?

Indeed they do include a warranty period gratis, Id want it in writing from them that id be able to return car if chasis or major hidden damage then they might take a panel off!!

Also consumer right laws,

Second hand car from a dealer

When you buy a second hand car from a dealer, you have the right, under theSale of Goods Act, to expect the car to:

  • be of satisfactory quality (taking into account its age and mileage)
  • meet any description given to you when you were buying it ( whether in the advert or in discussions prior to sale)
  • be fit for the purpose (for example, to get you from A to B safely).

If the second hand car does not meet these requirements, you have a right to claim against the dealer for breach of contract.

If something you buy is not 'as described', or if the seller is guilty of misrepresentation, you are entitled to:

  • give the second hand car back and get your money back, or
  • if you want to keep the car, ask for compensation (usually the cost of any repairs it needs)

But, if you buy a second hand car that was not described as being in excellent condition or good working order, and it breaks soon after you buy it, you don't have any right to reject it, or to claim compensation

They only do a three month warranty on engine and gearbox. So you may have to negotiate or pay for additional warranty.

Negotiate is the only option I am bringing.

I don't want to what would be seen in the eyes of VX purists 'wreck' a car from off here by spraying it the colour I want.

I also don't want a car that's done and ready, this is just as much about a project as it will be a fun car to drive- I have sets of tools I haven't touched or use since parting ways with my classic mini and RX8. And I had as much fun taking my cars apart as I did driving :-)

Also the cars which come up for sale on here come about £2k out of budget.

Nope, I am convinced I am going to go have look.

I'd only buy it if it drove as VX should and paper work is in order AND the price was where I want it to be.

Bodywork/respray it is tatty but should I buy it, its taken care of and will be achieved for a stupidly low price thanks to family connections and a spray booth hire out near MK.

If I don't buy it my cousin will just of been glad to have broken is Scooby in :-)

Just word of caution on the warranty side, in my experience not really worth the paper they're written on. So many loop holes like; only covered if the car has been serviced within the intervals outlined by the manufacturer. Therefore if there is a gap like you said, possibly not covered or they'll use the 'wear & tear' line and only covered if the part has failed and you can prove its a genuine part. I'm sure not all warranty companies are the same but my experience hasn't been all peace of mind as I was led to believe. My advice would be to go for it if you really love the car and if the colour really appeals. However, just consider you'll inevitably need to hold money back as there will be things that needs to be done (always is!) And things that it doesn't need but that you want! Before you know it you've spent another couple of grand and could have bought another VX... But then where is the fun it that :)

No one will think bad of u for spraying it a non standard colour, or the colour you want, at the end of the day it is/will be your car, and besides, that is part of the fun of these cars, you can make them your own, people are interested in what others do with their cars

Yeah warrantys are dodgy, when I bought my scooby, they put extended mechanical warranty on for free for 3 yrs, anyway, after a while a belt in the engine started squealing, I took it back to the dealer, which was a ford garage, they took the car and gave me a courtesy car, ran a diagnostic check and told me the power steering pump wanted replacing, 900 quid they said to fix, hang on.... I got mechanical warranty, not covered they said, charged me 100 quid for the diagnostic, that they didn't even tell me they were gonna do let alone charge me for and another 100 for the "courtesy" car! Told em to fyck off and got my car back.... got car home and had a look myself and all that it needed was a new belt, it was slipping!!! Robbing bastards, 8 quid belt!!! main ford dealer!!

Yeah the only warranty I see worth having is the one that comes with a brand new car and is the OEM/manufacturers own warranty. Had no issues with these before, those after market non OEM polices I am not a big fan of!

Shame on ford for trying to sting you!!
