My money is on timing and a big pile of detonation.

Would be good to see a photo of the damage. I wouldn't think advanced ignition would put a hole in the piston? Maybe over a long period of time but if the ignition was advance enough to cause such an effect the car would be way down on power and this was a 2.0 with around 250bhp.
I don't know how quickly and suddenly the problem happened? Maybe valve contact? I'm no expert to be fair.

I wonder if your oil burning is the cause of the detonation. Killing the piston and raising crank case pressure more putting even more oil in your inlet. Becoming a vicious cycle?

Surely all the gaskets would fail badly before a hole was created in a forged piston?

It’s probably a factor of a few different things to be honest and the final nail in the coffin was a 30+ degree trackday with the engine sat at constant 9k
