Hi, I am trying to understand whether any of the Avon tyres are suitable for our cars. I am guessing the ZZR is similar to R888 or A048. Has anyone had experience with Avon ZZ3 or ZZ5, these appear to be high performance fyres according to the Avon web site but of course Avon is always going to represent is product in the best possible way. Does anyone know what the ZZR is like used in the wet, damp, road or track?? Any sensible suggestions would be appreciated. Kind regards, Paul

I'm running ZZR's..last longer than A048's, have not noticed much difference in grip levels on track..but give a very harsh ride on normal road surfaces because of the stiff sidewalls. Will probably go back to the A048's, for my next set....at least that's what my bottom tells me!

Avon are launching a new ZZS in our sizes in October (already out for Caterham) which will give most of the dry grip but would be a better road/track option.

I'm presently using NS2R's I find them to be great. Given the price I believe they are a good option.

I've just bought a set of ZZS tyres for my Caterham. Not fitted them yet but AFAIK they are positioned in a similar market to Toyo R1R's. They are used in all classes in the Caterham championship and are supposed to be an excellent all round tyre.

Plus they look cool :P

Thanks, just to be clear. The ZZS is a totally different tyre to the ZZ5 (Zed Zed Five)..?

Avon ZZ3 and ZZ5 are ordinary road tyres, comparable to the OE Bridgestones, Goodyear F1's, Kumhos etc. the ZZ3 is discontinued, the ZZ5 is much better, ZZS is supposedly going to be a halfway house between the road tyres and the 'all out' dry track day ZZR which is comparable to AO48, R888 etc

Directly from Avon, details here http://www.lotrdc.com/tyres-avon-zzr or ES Motorsport http://elise-spares....-AVON-ZZR-TYRES TBH, if your use is mainly road then I wouldn't bother. As said above, they do have stiff sidewalls which compromises ride comfort but, IMO, on track they outperform R888s in both the wet and longevity Looking at the new (available October) ZZS the wet rating is the same as ZZR

I wouldn't touch ZZ3's with a barge pole. They came fitted to my "shed" when I bought it a few months ago and it turns out despite them all being quite new they're all misshapen and need replacing. Sub Kumho level I'd say.

The ZZ3 was/is poor, going out of shape isnt a common occurence with them though.

The 'wet ratings' of the the ZZR and ZZS may be the same but thats only a small snap shot of the tyres wet performance, a straight line braking test from cold is always flawed with 'trackday' tyres.

So is the ZZS a slightly less track orientated tyre than the ZZR?

Its being billed as a better tyre in mixed conditions with the ZZR the better option in the dry but only time will tell.....

Caterham Superlight Championship (R300s) use ZZR as their dry tyre and ZZS as a wet/inter tyre. Initial testing shows the ZZR is a good second quicker in the dry but there isn't much back to back testing going on as if it's dry they will always use the ZZR.

Think of the ZZR as an R888 and the ZZS as an R1R.

About to buy some ZZR.

However, been told that although they are road legal, they haven't passed the latest round of EU tyre legislation so can only be sold for motorsport use only.

Anyone else have them on a car that has passed an MOT? They're going on a track car, but this is driven to and from circuits.

Just tell the MOT tester that we don't give a sh*t about EU tyre legislation any more ;)
