I have tried again to push this along today. I am still waiting for the second prototype from my plastics man, it is frustrating. I never intended for it to be a 'job for a friend' but thats what it is.

No worries, most of us have been waiting since last year (for an option) so I'm sure another few months isn't an issue!

I asked again this week and it was supposed to happen Friday, but it didn't. He says he will try to get it done this week, so fingers crossed.

To all those who have pm'd asking if they can join the list and prices, please feel free to add yourself. There is no firm completion date and no firm price although it should be around the £160 mark.

Thanks

Philip

Saturday morning and the unicorn arrives: This is, I guess, The Philmetz Grill that we all hope will reincarnate the very rare Steinmetz and Splam derivatives.

Posted Image

I had the first Splam grill to test waaaay back in 07/08 and it's on Geds car, so I'm really pleased to get this to try, thanks Phil.

The first thing you notice is that this is very clearly a machined part, not moulded, with very sharp and precise lines. Very fine tool marks are visible on close inspection and I may block the front face with 1200 grit wet and dry to take that out, but in all honesty it's not that noticeable and it has the look and feel of a very high quality item, much stronger than the Stenmetz original and in no way fragile.

Posted Image

On the back there are four slotted brackets for attaching the grill. This is good as both the Steinmetz and Splam grills had eight of these and when looking head on into those grills I always thought the amount of fixings was quite cluttered and made it look an obvious aftermarket bolt-on part instead of an original GM item.

Posted Image

The grill is supplied with four rubber fixings like the original grills that we are all familiar with.

Posted Image

With the addition of a black washer these will fit through the slotted brackets like so...

Posted Image

...though for my own car I have cut four little rectangles of plastic to spread the load instead of a washer, but this is personal preference only.

The grill is then presented to the VX against the existing aluminium mesh and as I have fitted new black mesh I used a tool with an 8mm shaft to widen each of the mesh holes....

Posted Image

...to allow the fixing to pass through as below.

Posted Image

I had an issue with tightness on the fin marked with chalk below...

Posted Image

..but my car has a damage-repaired clam and is not exactly the shape it was when new. It's a simple fix anyway, I just removed a mm or so with 400 grit paper and it fits perfectly.

Posted Image

On Nads race car the grill fitted flawlessly.

Posted Image

The VX tow eye is extended to stick out through the V-grill, you can see this close up here...

Posted Image

(On my own car I turned it around when I fitted the new mesh so it's flat like an Elise one)

In these pics of it fitted I've used a bright light on one side to show the depth better

All in all its easily as good as the Splam, which was an improvement over the flimsy Steinmetz. I'm not sure what the plastic type is exactly, but it doesn't feel like it would be prone to sagging or badly damaged by stones. I am curious to know how the pieces are held together as I see no trace of glue anywhere.
