Looking to do an engine oil change, looking at getting 10W 50 fully synthetic is this the best to use on a stage 4??? was told to use 0W40 by a mechanic but I am sure I read on here that the oil passes the turbo seals????

Thicker is better in my experience, particularly as the engine wears. I tried 5w40 and got puffs occasionally, switched to 20w50 now and things have improved.

This is a chicken and egg situation. Does the oil leak because it's too thin, or because the seal has failed? Since it's a modern engine designed for 5W-30 and 5W-40 grade oils, i'm going out on a limb here and saying it's the seal failing. Why did it fail? It's a 8-10 years old, heat cycles and mechanical movement has slowly damaged it, as the seal will have certainly have been tested for compatibility with the recommended oil grades.

With regard to moving to thicker oils, two points:

1) this engine isn't designed for thicker oils, it's more stress to the oil pump, and possibly poor oil pickup from cold

2) thicker oils aren't sold any more (in any great volume - no manufacture specifies them, or has done for 15 years), so the thicker oils aren't actually tested in any approval testing. They are a complete unknown, and may not provide any engine protection at all.

Went from GM spec to silkolene pro s 10w-50, which was a Ester fully synth , for a couple of years then I think the stopped selling, so moved to Gulf Competition 10w-60 Racing Ester. Now I just use eurocarparts 521776031, TRIPLE QX 5w40 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil 5Ltr , both in the VX and the Porsche. ordered from carparts4less , http://www.carparts4...5_248^cc5_1051^

It sure is!   Is it decent oil? Any downside to buying cheap oil with a name I've never heard of?

Sometimes.

Smaller companies don't have a brand to protect so sometimes push the limits of what they can do, blending out of specification oils (too low viscosity, wrong additive systems) to save money, or simply making claims on the lubricant that it can't reach.

http://www.ukla-vls.org.uk/ are a conformance checking body in the UK, they randomly sample lubricants or take investigation leads from others. Example in case; Comma (supplier for Halfords) claim both GM and Ford oil specifications for the same lubricant, however they are mutually exclusive due to the viscosity requirements. I would recommend checking on the VLS website before making a decision, however be aware this is not a catch-all measure. It's why I stick to bigger names, they can't afford to damage their brand by selling incorrect lubricants.

Interestingly, here is a case for the Triple QX oil: http://www.ukla-vls.org.uk/case-outcomes/vls010125/

looks like its now on the site as ( without the C3 declaration ) API SN/CF, ACEA A3, B3, B4 VW502.00, 505.00, MB229.3, BMW LL-01, Renault RN700/710 interesting that the Porsche spec compliance has been dropped, but that might only be for the direct fuel injection cylinder head engines, possibly not important for my '02 model year, or the VX. seems to be made by onix-oil , http://www.onixoil.c...-1392229091.pdf

The C3 and A3/B4 claims are a throw back to earlier ACEA specifications where you could claim both, changes in the 2010 issue of ACEA made them completely incompatible by establishing low chemical limits for A3/B4

The additive technology won't be the same, they'll change suppliers now and then. Porsche won't be a must have requirement so they'll have been happy to drop it.

I've been using 5W-40 on my stage 4, no problem.
