Got a knocking from the left rear on cornering. Gaiters are ok, but seems clearly a CV joint. Wheel bearing seems ok, although I will replace it as I have the hub off.

Bit dissapointed as a cv joint shouldn't fail at that milage (40k) unless the gaiter goes.

Get a quote for a new outer CV joint and two new boots of +£800 from the Swiss Opel Speedster center of incompetence. They quoted a whole new driveshaft for £700.

I don't mind paying the money for a good fix, but it does seem a bit much. Shaftec (?) ones are £150.

Not sure I want to replace the whole shaft and get into gearbox oil seal hell either, but then I don't want to put it back and find out it's the inner joint!

Helpful advice gladly received!

Get a quote for a new outer CV joint

(nevermind. Just reread your post, and this is the part you don't need)

Boot on inner side also fits from kia sedona (part nr 0 K55 22 2540)

That is the left outer joint (wheel side) - it's just missing the cage, bearings and cup from the inside.

On my driveshaft it was the inner (gearbox side) that failed after the boot split on a track day.

If your suspension is lowered then your CV joints get a harder time (due to the more acute angle they have to run). Having said that one would hope that they should really last 100k miles...

Driveshaft sagas;

My car is at standard ride height for 95% of the time.  When the Nitrons are on for TDs, it's lower.  A few years ago a boot failed.  Liam changed.  A year or so later, boot went again.  I bought a second hand shaft.  The outer joint was seized (suspect accodent damage).

New boot again, joint failed at Zandvoort and I had a nervous and slow ride home.

I looked at all the options, a new OE shaft was over £400 from Autovaux.  Shaftec are too cheap, suspect Chinese origin.  Given the grief I've had with the shaft, possibly the only original part that has caused multiple failures, delayed holidays, caused a TD to be abandoned, I bought original.

Would do so again.  £300 to fit is bit steep, it's not a nice job, the wishbone is a fiddle and the gearbox oil runs out, but it's not worth £300.

The car's not lowered. I can only think it's because it was stood a lot by the previous owner. He did 14k miles in 7 years. I had to replace the front nearside wheel bearing and I've never had a wheel bearing to do before.

The £700 is not fitted, that's the price of the part. I would much rather pay £400 to autovaux and ship it. Will request a quote.

It was around 11 months ago, (Zandy last year) and the VAT took it to just over £400, about £340 + IIRC

Ordered through Autovaux. £300 - no vat as it's outside the EU. Even with the shipping it's less than half the price of the Swiss supplier.

Talk about trying to shaft you!

Heat from exhaust can add to the issue on pax side. There is a reason oem has a heat shield on it 😉 DG

There's always the option of trying equal length shafts if the standard long shaft is getting expensive.. Combination of Vectra bits. http://www.vx220.org...e-shaft-for-22/

Are the prices quoted above just for the the inner joint then or the complete shaft with 2 cv joints?
