Got a night out in York in Sept.

Any advice on quirky/cool bars worth visiting ?

To gauge the level...not Walkabout/Yates's places and not old man pubs either!

Something a bit more chilled out...Pitcher and Piano / Living Room type establishments I guess.

I remember a long time ago we went into a bar that was a converted church? but I have no idea where it is ?

Cheers,

Wrighty

Have a nice cuppa-tea at Betty's tea rooms.

Jeez, I remember it in the 70's and it's still there!

2nd the Betty's tea room!

Bridge street has a slug and lettuce on the east side of the bridge and 'the Parish' (the church that's now a bar) is just a short walk over the same said bridge.

Coney street has a pitcher and piano which on the river and next to that revolution bar (its okay but can be a bit rowdy on weekends). Short walk away is all bar one which is very nice.

In terms of slightly quirkier bars / pubs on stonegate there is Delirium Tremens which is a pub above a shop in an old medieval building they do a range of belgian beers which are all very tasty. Evil Eye Lounge is also on stonegate and used to be quite a good chillout bar however i think it may have recently changed or is no longer there.

The 'micklegate run' (starting at gibson's (a rock bar) and heading down micklegate to bridge street) is quite popular but the bars aren't great and pretty much fit in the Yates kind of bar category.

A few more people might chime in with there 2p worth.

Evil Eye is great. Massive range of beers and cocktails, fantastic malysian food and there's even beds to relax on upstairs :D

Nooo don't even bother with Micklegate lol. You want to be down swinegate and that area of York where you'll find 1331,Bora Bora etc. The hop is worth a visit down fossgate too.

Hotel du Vin has a nice atrium and though slightly poncy their champagne / cocktail afternoon tea is very very good.

Another vote from me but there's often a queue down the street.

There's always Little Betty's in Stonegate which tends to be a bit quieter than the main one as not a lot of people know it's there.

Is the York Arms still there, and does the barman still stroke your hand when he gives you your change, or do you have to be a teenager for him to do that?

The Hop is great, does some basic stone baked pizza now for not much cash. Really good drinking snack! Evil eye is great, ask for a bloody mary turned up to 11 ;)

Some good places to eat are stonegate yard and Oscars. Something abit posher is Lucia's, great food and cool cocktail bar.
