Are the engines canted at the same angle? As I understand it, the VX220 had a specific dipstick due to the engine angle, surely this should be kept (assuming the oil pickup point is the same position)

Is the oil cooler backfilling the sump overnight? Then start the engine fill the cooler again and show a big loss on the stick... Only check the oil one way.

So the conclusion is that my Saab engine with Saab dipstick is right and that the 2nd notch is the correct level for the oil??

I don't believe that's the case. Based on Joe's comments on the thread FLD linked to, he says:

 

1. The Astra Z22SE dipstick measures differently to the VX220 dipstick. (greater penetration into the sump)

 

2. The B207 and Astra dipstick measure the same (which is, measuring full with only 5 L of oil in a B207)

 

3. The VX220 dipstick in a B207 measures full at 7 L

 

Therefore from that, I would suggest that the VX220 dipstick is different because the engine angle is different, so you would want to keep the VX220 dipstick

if you use the vx220 dipstick tube you will have roughly one litre more oil in the Saab sump, therefore you have less oil in the sump with the Saab dipstick tube.

 

The actual dipsticks are identical.

Perhaps Vauxhall / Lotus decided to have a more 'pessimistic' dipstick given the predicted more extreme use of the engine in the VX220 application..

No idea I never worked on martins car Well apart from zandvoort when I helped remove his dead downpipe and drove him around when he was in the tightest shirt that he bought just for working on the car then :lol:

TBH, lower oil levels aren't really a concern. I'd only be worried about the dipstick type if there was a possibility of overfilling, which may explain Martin's oil consumption.

Is the B207 mounted in the same angle in our VX, as in the Saab?

I seem to recall my old vectra B z22se engine had the same angle as the vx220 engine thumbsup

 

Exmantaa posted earlier that the Saab requires 6.0 litres per oil change and depending where you fill to on the dipstick thats the same as the vx220 with a Saab sump and Saab dipstick tube.

 

6.5 litres is maximum and I would guess 5.5 litres is minimum on the dipstick, therefore 6 litres will be the middle mark, which is where the oil is supposed to be filled to.

So to summarize;

Dump all the oil (without changing the oil filter), measure 6.0L and pour back (or put other stuff in) => record that reading of the dipstick for reference as max. :happy:

I use a vx dipstick, and i take about 6.5 liters of oil on a change, when using my dipstick as instructed to fill at first notch only.

But my dipstick usage is irrelevant for Martin.

 

At post 353 he says he chucks in 7 liters.

 

Either i am underfilling, or martin is overfilling.

Just use the dipstick / pipe the engine came with.. If the engine is canted back slightly against its original application, then you'll perhap get slight over-fill (better than under) given the dipstick position is at the front / intake side of the engine.

 

The sump on my 2.4 bottom end has a flat sump, indicating that its used in a completely vertical orientation in the original vehicle, but I've used the standard dipstick and tube and it seems absolutely fine, with minimal / zero oil use.

We never actually measured what went in, it was topped up until it sat at the second mark on the stick. Each time it came out of a very large container at BOT so the amount used wasn't obvious

To be honest at the moment burning oil is just one of the problems as the car hasn't even got the decency to drive well. People helping (Extra special mention and praise to Frank and Chill here) are keeping me hanging in there. Thank you all.

Have just cancelled another track day, and wilL probably have to cancel another one in a couple of weeks, so will then have until at least March to try and make this the car it used to be.

ps Got rid of the tight shirt but kept the green trousers!
