Also for your exhaust part.

Since you can now get 300 horsies from your engine (with chills help), you may want to reconcider re-using that miltek part.

It's 2" in diameter, and if you put back a decent cat or an extra silenser in that one, it may just be to restrictive.

Also make sure that if you get somethign new, it has the extra bung for your wideband.

Give it some thoughts over the winter.

I intend to do nothing to it for now. I have a trackday at Goodwood in May which my car will not get on as it is noise wise, so any exhaust change will be done before that though.

Plan to just drive it as it is and get used to it.

Sounds like a brilliant idea. Pleased it's running properly again and I hope it's as reliable as the z22. Hope to see you at a track day in 2016. Happy new year!

After ignoring it for a couple of months drove it a few times (pouring rain and wind, pulled by the police within ten minutes, sunny dry day yesterday. Some akward flat spots here and there and not as good as the old ecotec yet, but quicker at the top end, still doing a litre of oil every 200 miles though. However the way it drives may be due to this -

Finally managed to get someone to do a leak down test (its been surprisingly hard to sort that out) good old Back on track saved the day.

Turns out my rings are not good on two cylinders. So I need new rings on my new engine, whoopee.

Bores looked ok, but two were only holding 75 psi from  a 90 psi pressure and it could be heard notably hissing past the rings and you could smell the oil.

The joyous saga continues but hopefully am nearly there and will one day, once again, have a decent car.

Martin, I'd be very interested to read/possibility see photos of the pistons and rings. I have a B207 with standard pistons and rings waiting to go in my car (yeah, still) and would like to understand if there's a manufacturing/build issue. Given the sorry state SAAB was in when these were assembled (unpaid suppliers, workers concerned about jobs), I wouldn't be surprised if there are issues with ring/piston quality or build (reversal of rings for example).

As I understand it, people with B207 engines and aftermarket pistons are not experiencing the same issues.

Is there a chance to install uprated pistons rings? As the oem rings seems to be the weak point. I only wondered why a m62 build cracks the rings!

At what point is it cheaper to cut losses and fit a box standard z22se?

A long way off yet, if Martin wants an engine capable of 300bhp+.

The rings where killed by the blocked downpipe, stop blaming the engine coco! P.s if he wants 300 he needs a smaller pulley like I said :D

I thought he just wanted reliable engine

If Martin solely wanted a reliable engine, he should have just fitted the box fresh B207 with the necessary external trigger wheel as was (or as you say a standard Z22SE) and lived with Stage2 power levels and not fallen into the expensive "just get a bit more power, whilst I'm there" trap that most of us (me, especially :beat: ) do, compounded by the Sussex anti-North Walsham sentiment that inevitably leads to OBDTuner costs as well.

In any case, assuming the exhaust failure was an accident waiting to happen, I'm not sure any option would have escaped unscathed.

Feature creep. T'is an expensive option as my wallet (and many other's) will testify to. Posted Image

Rings are usually made by  few companies like NPR etc and should be easy enough to source. You could even install 0 leak rings if they make them, my dad used to think they were great.

What I wanted was reliability but I did get caught up in the, while its being done why not get something a bit better (Oh how I laugh at that thought now!).

My main aim now is to get a car that is somewhere near as good as a 2.2 ecotec. Its a just a pipe dream though, but one I have spent, many many thousands pursuing.

The cats may have had nothing to do with the rings as other things happened along this engines joyous journey.

My next car will be standard, I may even enter concours competitions to stop me having any interest in modding ever, ever, ever again.

The problem with modding is it is addictive. 12 months after you have sorted these problems you will start the how much extra power will this smaller pulley get the thread.

Its not addictive to me at all.

Once this is sorted I will either love it and use it but never do anything to it again, or like it and it will go.
