Given the shitty rear biased weight distribution, unless of course you want old skool 911 dynamics, weight out of the rear is probably better found than weight out of the front.

weights going out everywhere ;)

a bit here, a bit there. everything adds up. (need to make up for the 100kg in the drivers seat somehow!)

im trying to bias the weight of added bits to the front* where possible, but doesnt mean im not cutting fat wherever it presents itself

*eg, im rebuilding the firewall and the IC barrel will sit essentially behind the seats on top of the fuel tank

VX/Speedster fibreglass/clams are quite 'substantial' compared to the S2 Elise jobbies.

Many parts on the VX/Speedster are double-skinned like the engine cover which makes them nice and rigid, but they do weigh quite a bit..

If you don't mind a little flex here and there (and the GRP really doesn't mind ;) )  then you can cut out quite some reinforcement or second skin pieces from the back side of the various bodypanels and fixings of the OEM clams and various panels.

Bye, Arno.

Ed, cracking work. Slight hijacking but on the subject of weight reduction on the rear did I dream that someone produced a lightweight rear engine cover (fibreglass)? And any other idea how to save weight on the rear (other than lighter exhaust system)? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I havent even looked at the back yet, so can't comment myself. Front hood vs angle grinder wasn't that exciting. It's about 600gr lighter, but moreso a lot simpler. There was a further section of double skinned surface (corners near the windshield where I could've taken the double skinning off, but realistically it'll be like 100gr and it does look to add quite some structural stiffness there) so I just left it. So minus hinge, fasteners, catch mechanism etc etc, somewhere between 2-2.5kg in the hood. Nothing earth shattering, but it's 2.5kg. Might have a look at a splitter/vane to reduce the aero-shittiness of the bridge, but we'll see.

Was guessing whether the QM fingers would play along with the std M32 release bearing and input shaft sleeve

Well, they do, and the bearing sits perfectly, and the sleeve clearance is just fine

So, stripped the vinyl wrap off my replacement 'good' clam... ie the one that was only broken in half in one location, and got down to fixing it. Lots more to go (including some stuff from FLD) but at least it's looking like a single piece of car part again.

Also had an unexpectedly badly smashed radiator support box. Didn't look that bad initially, but it was cracked badly in multiple spots, had lots of ripped out holes, and was quite bent/skew. I decided to ditch the wings in favour of splitter support rods, so they went too.

What lump is that again?

Its a modernised 2.2 NA engine with a turbo and lots of nice features, essentially. Hence its a bolt in job (more or less)

And 310hp is pessimistic... ;)

A20NFT Saab/GM 2.0 L direct injection turbo. same block family as the Z22/B207 etc, so alloy block, and essentially 'bolts up' (Gearbox/Engine Mounts/Hoses etc) 310hp is what we'll be registering it with ;)

Maybe it looks quite similar, but:

- DI

- VVT

- no sleeves, better heat transfer

- under piston oil cooling

- forged crank and rods

- stainless twin scroll turbo

- dry-sump like behaviour - brilliant oilpan (drove it with 2,4g on the track this weekend - without any issues)

- ethanol compatible

Not only does it have more power and is lighter than a Z22SE - the car even brakes better due to the cam driven vaccum pump for the brake booster.

A totally stock A20NFT has more torque at 1000 RPM (270 Nm) than a Z20LET ever had (250 Nm).

Or in other words: The whole torque curve of the Z20LET is below the Idle torque of A20NFT ;)

And a totally stock A20NFT revs better, quicker and more direct than any tuned Z22SE due to the sophisticated control unit and variable valve timing.

Here's how it sounds like:

Back to wortex generators. Air planer have these winglets and no flat surface after them and this reduces drag?! I think Ive seen this on a Speedster.
