I drove a Boxster S through some country roads today and have decided I really want one. So I will be selling the VX220 soon. I will post something in the for sale section soon, it's Silver with 100k miles so I will probably only get a £5 :P

Just want to say good bye, it's been a great year and this forum is full of brilliant advice and some very dedicated and helpful people.

However I may be back if I get bored of the Boxster, but if there is a next time it will be supercharged as I feel I have outgrown the NA :)

I swopped my tubby for a 987 Boxster, 3.4 S, not as quick and completely different, but now that I'm of a certain age (OAP) I find it easier to get in and out of, and ''little'' things like the electric roof and two decent sized boots, and .....

I think it may be cheaper to own long term, but only 26.5mpg.

VX forum better tho, mainly I guess because the help is required more often  :grouphug:

This forum is awesome.. Amen to that. I am most worried about the reliability for the Porsche to be honest with IMS bearing failures and cylinder bore scoring. With the VX I'm not worried about things going wrong as they are relatively inexpensive and I know there are people on here that can help and make it far more cost effective.

I had a 986.1 boxster s in rainforest green with grey leather. And they say you can't buy taste! Was the cheapest car on autotrader at the time and my first Porsche so I didn't care. It was great, loved the noise and was my first convertible so I thought I was cheese on toast. Few years later bought a 986.2 in black/black which was really nice to look at, and had some good mods. But it was ruinously expensive with an electrical gremlin issue affecting the audio, windows, locks etc and a few months after selling the engine blew up. So my boxster journey was a mixed bag to be honest, but what I would say is if it's your only car the boxster beats the vx hands down for daily use, but if it's a second car the vx is more of an event (esp when supercharged). Whatever you do your in a good position!

I've got a boxster S in at the moment. 987.1 but it's got 98k on the clock so would probably have blown by now if it was going to. Is that a good sales pitch? :D

It's more of a case that they are known to need replacement engines and the cost seems to be £8-15k which is a big risk for me even if it's only 1% of cars. I can't risk that much money.

I had a 911 carerra 2. I wrote it off after 2 months. then I had a carerra 4 which was better on the road. The IMS bearings are a major issue with no warning of when they might go. Replacement engine typically 6k! Driving it quite sensibly as well I got through a full set of pirelli p zero tyres costing 650 quid. That's a big costing every month. and the fuel bill........ they're cheap enough to buy but a lot to keep going. I also needed 2 front shocks.on the shelf at the dealer 480 each. other retailers could get them for only 280 each but guess what- Porsche stopped bilstein supplying anybody else so as to increase their sales! I waited 3 months but nobody could get them....except Porsche! I sold the Porsche the other day and have my first vx. Hope you have an open cheque book! Good luck....

I love them & I've had a couple of them. They are a proper everyday sports car. I'd take one over a VX anyday if I was using it on the road mostly. They are also damn good on track if you upgrade brake fluid & pads! You won't be disappointed.

I test driving Boxster S's as a replacement for my previous Elise but ended up with a Tubby as I just couldn't see myself getting up early on a Sunday just to go for a blat.  The Boxster just didn't have that raw appeal.

However, on the flipside I was very impressed with it as an all round package and have it in mind for when I can no longer fold myself into an Elise/VX.  I think my wife is looking forward to that day as she's hated all my elises, for the very reason that it hasn't got electric roof, two boots, proper seats, some interior carpet, etc. :)

I think if/when I do go for one I'd probably be looking for the 2.9 though - more than matches the original S but with (allegedly) a more characterful and safer engine.

Given that a lot (the majority?!?) of VX owners do a lot of servicing/upgrading of their own car, why is it that whenever Porsches are discussed, all parts are measured by what a dealership would charge? Surely a set of non OEM shocks etc can be had? When I get a Porker, I'll be doing as much of the work on it as I can.

Not sure Vocky would be that keen on playing with a Porker engine... Joe's fancy K-series seems to have been a displeasure.

Probably because if you want to sell in the future the average Porsche owner will only accept a full service history. I agree an engine is an engine and you could service and rebuild it just like any other car.
