Got in my car yesterday Eve pressed the start button and it turned over very slowly sometimes not at all and wouldn't start!! I checked the voltage and was 12.2v which is. Generally too low to start, so I got the jump leads on it from another car and still the same even though I had over 13v!!! I've checked the volt drop to the engine but that was fine! So I called the AA he turned up did the same as me with the same results. He thinks the alternator is ceased which is why it won't turn the bed very fast..... I've never heard of it surly the belt would slip and you would notice it It's a new ish starter and battery 4months old Any ideas?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated 👍🏻 I will have a look over the weekend if I can manage to push it up the hill into my garage 😬

New battery. Did you check voltage under load?

I didn't manage to do that as it's difficult to do on your own! The AA bloke had a power pack and jump leads attached and it was still the same! 😔

If the battery is FUBAR it will drag down any other power source attached.

Measure the voltage when you crank it over to see how much it drops

well I've finally had chance to look at it today.

The voltage on the battery was 12.2 and after 3hrs fast charge went up to 12.6 still the same issue... checked the connections on the starter which are all good! cranked the engine over by hand and the alternator isn't ceased. I have had a lead from the engine to the chassis. No change!!!

I did a measure of the Voltage on the starter when the button was pressed and that went down to nearly 8V not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing??

however now I've reconnected the battery the passenger indicators light up and stay on........not sure if thats a code for anything

Doing all this with a hangover is probably not my best idea!!

The VX220s seem to need a lot of cranking force to start. I've used "knackered" VX220 batteries to jump Elises off before now.

I'm hoping it's the battery I will take it back to halfords tomorrow eve to get checked it's only 6months old. It's one of my favourite jobs taking the battery out....😡 The starter is also only six months old too 😬

so Halfords said the battery had 12.4 v and the condition was Ok but still replaced it for me just to make sure. I got home fitted it and still the same... :angry2:

Next is to disconnect the coil pack and get a wire from the battery straight to the starter and see if its the starter, but its forecast crappy weather for the rest of the week and I can't manage to push it up the hill into my garage. this is starting to get on my tits..

any suggestions on what else I could check?

Check all high current connections between the starter motor and the battery.  This includes earth connections as well as positive connections.  What might appear a good connection, may in fact have corrosion on the connector surfaces.  The metal connector surfaces should be shiny.

8 volts at the starter is a little low.

A high electrical current requires only a small electrical resistance to cause a large voltage drop. e.g. surface corrosion on a connector.

If you let the battery go flat , even if relatively new, it can be knackered !

update!!

got home tonight and connected a 25mm2 cable from the neg battery terminal to the gearbox as below hay presto starts perfectly.....thank fcuk for that. so something has gone tits with the cable somewhere. instead of spending hours finding whats wrong I might just run the new cable in or see if its just a small one to the chassis thats needed. not sure I can leave it as it is
