I was looking around to check my sparkplug heat range. Now due my boosted upgrade (2.2 turbo) I want to change to a 1 step colder plug. I now run the OEM NGK LTR6B-10T plugs.

Here's the confusion:

The Z22SE engine comes with the NGK LTR6B-10T sparkplug,

It seems the USA guys run a LTR5 (or simular ac Delco) plug as OEM = 1 step warmer.

Then there are the people here who run SC stage 2 with OEM plugs....(as well as recomanded by DBilas with there 2.2 turbo setups).

.. so I'm a bit confused here what to get. Heat range 7 doesn't seem to hurt but I want some more info before spending 35 quid for nothing.

Cheers

I would do a few miles on the car and then check the spark plugs condition
I did a bit of this last year

The standard plugs seem to cope ok on SC engines (well, mine have), so do you NEED a change..?

i choose 7 last year from 6s (NGK) the year before, it was suggested to go for 8s but lowering the compression of the engine can change the temp range also ie need to go hotter with a lower compression

NGK also say to run a cooler plug rather than a hotter plug if your unsure because there is less chance of damage to engine because of the tip getting to hot

Thanx for the replies guys. Most of it I allready found on the web though lol... Its more the confusion if the oem plug is a 5 or 6 grade. If the US boosted guys go 1 step colder they go to grade 6... which we allready run. @Tibby: Thats a grade 8 plug. To cold in my opinion. We ran a 7 on the 400hp sr20's. I think I'll get a set of NGK LTR7IX-11's and gap them to 0.7. The turbo makes more torque than SC and I run more boost than the DBilas setup. Cheers

I found out that people here also run the NGK PTR5A-10' as stocker plug.

@Tibby: Sorry my bad, the Bosch uses a different heat range number (as in the chart from Chill).

Bosch 8 range is a NGK 5 range. I think I'm allright with the NGK 6's grade plugs. See how it goes ;-)

The standard ones which came with the Saab turbo engines were NGKR pfr6d-10g But are not z22se shaped

From what I've found out, most stock turbocharged engines come with 6 grade plugs as standard and are able to hold on for a few more tuning "stages".

I'll keep the 6 grades and hopefully do some decent learningsessions this weekend. We'll find out if the new plugs are up to it.

Hey Daan The good thing of the Bosches is they have 3 points for giving a spark. ( i know, only one is being used, but in case of pollution there's more change giving a spark) You really do not need fancy panty irridium or something Sparks (where the tips can burn off)....Just keep it simple. grtzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
