Update:  battery was off for 2 weeks.  Auto electrician removed the battery (to retrieve the 10mm spanner I had dropped in when disconnecting!) and found and removed an ancient rusty allen key.  So, one more rattle gone - result!

He re-connected the battery.  The new relay was still in.

It now starts on the button.  4 times in a row so far - I am trying to re-set the ride height before getting the toe settings done, so lots of start / stop.  I am hoping the guys can at least measure camber and give me a datum point so I can count the shims to adjust ... I don't have Back on Track or similar here to do that.

Anyway, I am so paranoid now that I will switch the whole house supply off to change a fuse.  I take the battery out of the car before I do almost anything ....

Both are common sense, assuming of course there is definitely only one supply into the house.

But safe isolation and proving dead apply even if you turn the whole house off.

And of course there are risks disconnecting the battery too, especially in a confined space like the VX. Make sure you never short out a spanner against the body or other terminals etc.

Always remove negative first, and refit negative last.

I am back on this thread ... car hasn't moved in weeks, although it has rained for weeks here also which would have restricted movement!

Now, the bloody thing won't start at all.  New battery as last on had died (only 2 yrs old).  The usual battery remove / replace issues ... but done and trickle charged.

Starter motor smoking - I have taken it out and need a new one.  There are lots to choose from ... any recommendations?

Kind regards

Roy

Sound advice.

Despite the risks ( Chyynaaa ), I got this for my Z22 car, and a few months on, all is still well.

But if it's smoking just sitting there.....that would be a rather huge concern. Or do you mean smoking when trying to start ?

Do some diagnosing before condemning the starter too.
