When parking up and reversing a slow speed I can hear a slight squeal as though the brakes are slightly applied. It's normally just when going in reverse, if I was say backing out of a parking space or driveway.

Is this normal or does it suggest that maybe the handbrake is binding?

My handbrake does only come up like 2 or 3 clicks, won't move more than that really.

I'm used to a Celia that used to do about 10 clicks before the handbrake would bite, so not sure if this is normal for the VXT or not  :D.

10 clicks before biting on your old car? :o

Didn't that leave a mark on your headlining?

I might have exagerated a bit.

Lets put it this way, on a flat I think it was 6/7 clicks. If I was stopping on an incline I had to give it and extra click ( sometimes using 2 hands ) so that I wouldn't roll :D

If I parked on a hill and put that Celica handbrake on 3 clicks, soon as I took my foot off the brake pedal I'd be sliding away back down the hill! ( It did use handbrake shoes mind, rather than calipers ).

Is 3 clicks normal for the VX then? I had a look at the adjustment procedure earlier as per this document. I guess I could just check if the measurement is correct with the handbrake released, 76mm.

Important: For the auto adjustment system tofunction correctly, it is essential that eachcaliper lever fully returns when the parkingbrake lever is fully released. Check thatdimension X (illustrated) is minimum of 76 mm,to ensure that caliper levers are fully returned.

3 is about right. I refurbished my rear calipers and changed the handbrake cable and took a wee while to self adjust, but it's about 3 clicks now.

What do MOT rules stipulate?

as long as the centre pull cable is not snagged on the undertray, a bit of LM grease would be good and check the pull cable sits central.
