Hi All,

I'm looking for a few opinions..

For full disclosure: Yes this topic contains Subarus and discussion of Spoilers. Two topics that may be considered very controversial on these forums, you have been warned :)

So back in May I sold my 2nd car (Excluding the VX which we still have :) ) a 2013 Fiesta which was fun while it lasted but was losing money quickly and decided to buy a car that i've always wanted to own at least once in my life having grown up with my Dad having a few, a Subaru!

So with getting Insured not a problem these days I went ahead and bought a 2003 Japanese Import WRX, which at some point had been previously "Chavved up" with a massive wing, mudflaps, dodgy wheels, the whole 5 miles but it had been nursed back to an OEM state by the previous owner, going as far with his surgical attention to detail to refresh the bits under the body work, sorting out any rusty components, suspension, refurbishing brakes, roof, bonnet, bumper resprays, fitting an entirely new interior, etc.

Apart from the odd mark in the paint from stone chips and 100k miles on the clock it is a very clean car.

Having said that. I do not like the WRX Spoiler. Not that its bad or that I want a giant STI wing on it (really don't want to make the car look like an STI wannabe) its just that the WRX spoiler is a bit dated these days in my opinion, for those that aren't sure what this looks like normally: bare in mind my car is red :)

So with that established I had given myself a few options, going spoiler-less isnt not too uncommon and was actually OEM on a few JDM cars but somewhat rare.

These options being; No Spoiler, a Small "Do-Luck" style boot lip (in body colour, not carbon), or the full ducktail:

Currently im leaning towards the Do-Luck style lip, it adds a bit to the rear of the car that you lose from dropping the spoiler but isn't as harsh as the duck tail although I do love a good duck tail wing.

Anyway I can imagine this will spark a flame in some people's hearts of harsh opinion and criticism but go for it :) any and all responses are welcome here

the boot lid little lip (2nd from bottom) gets my vote, as long as its painted the same colour as the car

if you go spoiler less you need to loose the "scoop" on the hood as well IMO

Can't see a picture of one on the posts you made but I'd go for a small rear lip spoiler (the little one that goes the full width of the boot - similar but smaller than the VXT lip).

I'd just leave it as it is.

And get rid of it sharp'ish. :D

Saw that comment coming :)

Nothing wrong with it, beats a 1.0 Ecoboost Fiesta as a daily driver and was half the price

Or would it be better if I'm another 20 something year old who leases a lovely white Audi S3 or such? :P

Nah I don't mind the comments, half the reason I posted it here was to get a nice array of responses so its all just a bit of fun

Would definitely keep it body colour, not a fan of Carbon panels sticking out from the rest of the colour.

Problem with losing the scoop is the intercooler is top mounted, if you were to get a front mount intercooler you could happily lose the scoop but im not going to go through that hassle for my daily :) it already has around 300bhp as it is which is a fairly safe and fun number on the Japanese engine block

The problem with Japanese cars, adding an aftermarket spoiler (I.E Not an STi) only really suits if the car has a myriad of other bits (front lip and so on)

No spoiler would look ok, small boot lid would be the best version (providing it's body colour), full duck tail  thumbsdown

STi would be easiest, and wouldn't look out of place.

Problem with the STI wing is then it looks like an STI which its not and every Subaru has them, the good, the bad and the ugly whereas the spoilerless look is still quite uncommon, not to say i want to be a unique little snowflake im just a fan of subtle styling with a small flare these days.

Besides I got the VX for the big wing, should probably hide the Exige spoiler before Techie comes back :D

It's an extremely difficult car to do subtle modifications to.

Replacement boot lid would be ideal (I like the M3 CSL style) but price doesn't seem too steep (replica).

Personally it would be a case of just leave it as it is. All three options look horrid in my opinion.

Brilliant cars!  I had a Legacy 4cam Turbo for 15 years and it was one of the best cars I ever owned, reliable, quick and fantastic handling.  Would have bought another but the dealers down here are thin on the ground, and thieves!  I would put whatever wing on it was there originally, usually the best choice, alternatively a small plinth mounted wing.  Big wings may look dated but the whole car is a bit dated visually so better to keep it that way IMHO!  It's your choice though!

I haven't seen many without a spoiler in person but then again there aren't many down this way at all

Problem with removing the spoiler is the holes it leaves in the boot, some get them welded, some get a replacement boot lid (Which i'd do) or some just cover them up.

Currently still leaning towards the Do-luck style lip or the ducktail, i know the latter is going to be a bit too much for some people but I like the way it keeps a curve in the rear of the car in that side profile picture.

In my opinion the do-luck lip gives more of a show car impression whereas the duck tail looks more old-school race car in my opinion :)

Ducktail for me. Don't think a Scooby can be that subtle.

Here's my car as is, bit of a bad image but I didn't have much room to move back to get a proper picture. Annoyingly red is rather rare so there's no good examples of either lip on a red car.

Fully expecting some more beef now about the car but oh well :D still brings a smile to my face on the daily commute
