Lots of people have tried it, cost and complexity make it unattractive. Suspect that will always be the case

IIRc SAAB did it waaaaaaay back, and it seemed somewhat pointless.
Without looking at that link, the way I'd do it would be....
Direct injection
Variable valve timing with sufficient swing to keep the valves (mostly intake) open/closed all the way to TDC
If adding FI, use a decent VGT
Mince about with the above to give the effect of a VC engine... for bog all real world gain imho

Must make a massive difference to TC'ed car if they can manage to make it work for an average 150,000 miler engine.

It's one of those holy grail things like the Atkinson cycle that you can work towards with other more simple technologies and get the same effect.
With batteries and very good gearing you can keep an engine at high load. The only other time you could do with varaiable compression is starting a very highly boosted diesel - but I think there are better ways than that.
