Tullett is also a tougher fit, and is as bit wider than the heat insulation:

Insulation modified to fit:

And the view from underneath, all installed...

Ends then also wrapped in exhaust heat wrap to keep heat down

More trouble shooting, and great support from SCS and we cracked the problem.

The tacho feed from the ecu uses a pulsed earth as a signal and shares this earth with the fuel pump relay earth.

That means, a pulsed earth may be affecting the fuel pump supply. Adjusting the duty cycle from 50% to 98% fixed it...

Surprised as it always seemed spark related not fuel related!!

So car fixed and running - for a bit..

Backed it out of the garage and it died and wouldn’t restart - not even poor firing..

Further tests later on found it starting some times and not others - making me think it’s a working issue.

The SCS system comes with a crude adapter loom which plugs into the old alpha loom, so maybe a fault on the old loom.

Upon inspection, I found if I moved the loom around I could hear a relay clicking - making me think there is a fault in the loom..

So, I’ve bitten the bullet and am making a new loom for the SCS ecu, which will also design out the risk with the mixed tacho and relay feed

First off was deciphering the alpha loom and sketching up a new one for the SCS set up. Also gave me chance to adjust lengths to make it fit better:

Line by line summary of each wire:

50 wires and no duplicate in colour!!

Big thanks to Richard Flanders, who’s also done this and shared his info too. Ray was all gleaned from an evening with the old loom and a multimeter!!

Next step was making up the loom board. Routes were all marked out on a board and nails used to mark junction points:

Then the wires added one by one methodically:

Then fun with heat shrink - starting on the outer kegs and then working inwards...

All shrink wrapped:

I also added to the loom to incorporate the oil pressure switch - this was a separate mod on the alpha loom.

I also removed the cooling fan switch from the thermostat switch as it will be controlled directly from the ecu.

That brings us pretty much York date...

This week I fitted on the ecu plug. Should have done this first as it was a pain and play in the wires was minimal.

Done!!

Then tested each pin back to its termination in the loom and compared it with the alpha to be sure

Next step will be insulating / covering the loom by the plug and common bonds, then fitting the rest of the plugs...

Yes indeed!!! Brilliant work. Your VSE lives on annoying my neighbours at 7am when I leave for work. Cams still in their box as I muster up the stones to fit them.

Also took the time to fix a minuend oil leak too. Noticed after the rebuild oil coming out of the front left of the can cover.

Traced it back to the bearing cap which cones out of the cover.

Unbolted and removed it and used a bead of high temp sealant to crest a seal (as per Haynes)

Posted Image

Bolted back up and tested - no leaks!!

Then cleaned down all the gearbox - don’t want any trace of oily meals in this engine bay!!

With all these changes, and trouble shooting, got a nice little collection of ECUs now!!

So, looking last night found another interesting clue to the poor running on the old loom.
The file relay on the alpha loom doesn’t feed the fuel pump directly, it feeds the original fuel pump in the bolt.

This original relay provides power for the pump itself and a 12v supply to the coil pack.

So if the pulsed earth was causing an issue it might have been affecting spark quality too.

The new loom has a completely separate earth for the fuel pump relay to the tacho feed so this will be eliminated.

Wiring up the relay and fuse blocks, and lots of wires so could go wrong. So, with the adage of measure twice and cut once I’ve drawn out the relay and fuse blocks on a schematic which matches the block layout...

Too tired after a long week at work and paranoid on getting it wrong, so crimping and connecting will be a sat PM job...

Self laminating cable labels were a fail!!!

Posted Image

Ordered some pre-printed heat shrink ones for most of the connectors, so need to wait for those to come before fixing the connectors on...

Relay and fuse blocks done - worth waiting to do it when I wasn’t as tired!!

Quality of the connectors is great, with a lot of waterproofing around the ports:

Crimped wires with grommet on each wire:

Posted Image

Connector on, you can see the clip that will then go over and hold the grommets in place:

Posted Image

Finally, boot fitted for extra protection:

Usually the rubber grommets are crimped into the terminal. I think you'll be OK but there is a very remote chance the grommets could migrate down the cable with vibration.
