Thanks Vocky. Seems the starter is fkd. Son managed to get it off and I have a replacement for tomorrow - unfortunately he will have gone home by then so the fix will have to wait a bit.
Thanks for the help people.

If your son is not available in the near time, just put a request out to help switch your starter motor.
Usually beer tokens or a decent meal is enough.

Wow, that's amazing! I had no idea folk would be so helpful. If Ben looks like being away for a while I may try that... You mean start a thread on here, yes? I did consider trying a mobile mechanic but I'm not sure I'd let one loose on my precious VX.If your son is not available in the near time, just put a request out to help switch your starter motor. Not making any promesses on success, but yes.

Finally managed to bench test the starter, and it worked ok. So next plan is to get underneath with wife in the car and see if the starter connections get 12v when the starter button is pressed. (Suggestion from absent son, afraid I can't claim the credit..)
A (normal) grey relay does not fit/work in the starter relay connector block.
Just remove the yellow one and bridge the thick brown and brown-red wire to see of the starter turns or not.
I have no idea where the grey relay idea came from, the pin layout does not even work
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if it turns out to be a faulty yellow relay, and they're not available, is there a workaround? Something else I could use? Or are there places that can rebuild a dodgy relay?

No ones mentioned that all these wires and relays are in a place that no normal human can get at!

Hereas a very quick test you can link the '+' and 'earth' symbol together, this will power the starter motor solenoid and crank the engine over. to fit a grey relay instead then; Brown 2.5mm goes to pin 30 Brown/Red 2.5mm goes to pin 87 White/Red 0.5mm goes to pin 86 Green 0.5mm goes to pin 85 Remember that the starter button will still work when the engine is running, so do not press it whilst the engine is running. Main topic thread - http://www.vx220.org...-starter-relay/

Very goodbye point Martin It's best to take the relays out Mark if necessary the correct position Remove rear wheel Seperate the relay holders ( just slide ) And thread them in to the wheel space where there easy to work on You will have to remove wheel arch to You will probably find it will work when you put it back together
Are they not in the boot for a good reason?

Did you test the "hotwire" option as you posted the picture from on Jan 2?
(to prove the yellow relay is at fault)

Yes - relay clicked (fast I think) and got smoke from the jump leads onto the battery terminals in the car.. So stopped very quickly! (Battery was out of the car)

myself and Harry are not so far away.. I'll message him and see if we can come take a look
I have a spare starter and relay we can try out

I'm a bit late to this party, but are you trying to connect jump leads onto rusty/corroded battery connections? Dodgy connections at both ends of the jump leads might mean that you are not getting enough voltage/current to close the relay.
Try cleaning the inside of the connectors, where they connect onto the battery terminal with sandpaper (and put the new battery into the car).
The other time I got similar problems, it turned out that the alternator was not charging the battery (car would run for a few minutes, then develop a misfire, then eventually cut out, no battery warning came up on the dash for some reason).

Wow, that would just be fantastic. I'm great at making the tea and bringing the biscuits but a bit rubbish with a spanner (though I do have some!) Even If I could borrow the relay to try out once I have the starter back in would be a huge help.
Thanks for the offer! Just let me know if either of the above could be made to work..

one other thing to check;
there is a black wiring plug down below the OEM air filter which has four brown wires, this supplies the power to pretty much everything in the engine bay. If these contacts have become corroded then you can get a similar issue.

Originally, was trying to use a new battery (old one fkd), outside the car with jump leads onto the VX battery leads (yes they're pretty dirty, will give them a proper clean).
In this configuration, and with the relay hot wired I connected the jump leads, heard the relay clicking fast (I think) and saw smoke from the connection between jump leads and the VX battery leads. Still no starter action.
Since then, have removed the starter thinking that's at fault, and now bench tested with the same battery but it seems fine. It throws the solenoid into place and I can see the gear going round in the cutout.. Video here:
