Hi,

I've got an LE5 engine for sale - I imported it from the US with about 70 miles on it, and have put around 2000 on it in a VX220 with ITBs. The car's been kept under cover for most of the time so the engine looks in pretty good condition (if a little oily).

Because it's a Gen 2 block it's got an oil cooler built onto the side as well - making it quite nice to fit in the VX.

A few years ago I had the edge of two pistons break up (I was running it on normal fuel at the time and I think it had been pre-detonating), which damaged the valves in two cylinders. I replaced all 4 pistons (with OEM) and the affected valves and it's been running fine since - although I imagine many folks here will just swap the cylinder head with a non-VVT head and possibly even change pistons so none of that's going to matter.

Selling because I've never managed to map it properly with the VVT - and there's so much traffic around Oxford that it just wasn't that fun for me to drive as it was.

Includes:

Gearbox

Alternator

Almost new starter motor

crank & cam position sensors

Doesn't include:

Inlet manifold

Exhaust manifold

Wiring harness

Water temp sensor

knock sensor

coil pack

£1000 ono

Might be worth splitting the gearbox, starter motor and alternator to sell on their own. What size is the alt 100 or 120 ?

just for info,

the z22se and B207 cylinder heads bolt straight onto the LE5 block and the block is identical for all the mounting points etc. I have one external trigger wheel left if required, which I kept for myself but no longer require.

Thanks - yes, I would split if anyone wants anything in particular. I just figured if I could get them all out of the garage in one shot it'd be a bonus, and someone might appreciate being able to build everything up outside of the car.

It's a 120A alternator - I got it from autovaux. If it was recon it was absolutely spotless - looked new when I got it.

What level of power output would be safe with this engine as stock bottom end with Saab head ?

Some early versions came with standard forged conrods, but most (like mine) came without these (powder forged). Still stronger than standard Z22SE rods, but I wouldn't push much past ~300bhp supercharged, which is what the internet seems to indicate based on use in the US..

Is there an easy way to tell which type they are? To replace the pistons I had to have them out and I took some pictures along the way - any thoughts about the attached?

it was only the 2006 and 2007 which had better rods, from 2008 onwards they used the cheaper version

Just to add to this: I believe it was from a 2006 car (that's what it said in the ad), so it's possible. I bought the engine in 2008 so it can't have been that new.

The pistons were brand new too, as you can see in the pic above.

I've a Alfa Brera with the 2.2 engine so it an L61 and I asked a while ago about using the bottom end of an LE5 to make a 2.4.

Vocky seemed to think it was a straight swap and therefore have been considering it for a while. I only need a short end though but you'd said you'd consider selling parts separate?

Just thought I'd ask on the off chance you'd be prepared to sell the block?

the 2.4 vvt cylinder head has zero value, so not worth splitting.

I have a spare 2.4 vvt head, it's been stripped of any useful bits and will be going to the metal recycling centre next !

Yes, I'd sell the main engine block separately, and I can take the head off for you if it makes it easier to transport (I imagine we could get it in the back of a car pretty easily?) - but as Vocky says the head basically worthless on its own so I wouldn't take anything off the price for not having it.

I'd go down to £800 for the engine - but realistically I'm not going to get £200 for the alternator/starter/gearbox separately and it'll be a pain to sell them so that's already quite a discount.

I'm not sure what the Brera's crank sensor pattern is - it might be you'd need to get an external trigger wheel for it?

From what i know, the pistons used in the Brera are very different so you may also have to find a solution for them.

Have a look for spare pistons for the 2.2 JTS and you will see what i mean.

They are direct injection pistons, so yep, you'd need those. There were versions of the LE5/9 that had direct injection I understand, but the design of the piston top will vary dependant on engine I'm guessing unless Alfa just grabbed the GM design off the shelf.

The 2.2 has a 86mm bore, the 2.4 a 88mm bore so they won't swap over.

Wow, yeah. The JTS is direct injection? I guess that's to help with the mixing.

edit: Bottom end now sold.

Yep: https://en.wikipedia.../JTS_engine#2.2   "With the arrival of 159, a 2.2 JTS was also introduced. The engine block is sourced from GM (Ecotec L61). Displacement: 2,198 cc Power: 136 kW (185 PS; 182 hp) @6500 rpm Torque: 230 N·m (170 lb·ft) @4500 rpm"
