Sounds like a good idea, the Z20LET gear is weak too.

Yes I've heard this also. Maybe the later ones are worth trying first before spending more money on parts 😂vocky suggests that the b207 timing chain cover have better gears/pump so they are an upgrade over the z22se ones. Thats all i was going to do.

Does the Z22YH also have stronger oil pump gears?

Contrary to what we used to believe, the "GM Racing" gears are not billet, but just OE ones hardened.
When I had my old engine built, I had spare sets hardened by the same process other manufacturers uses, which worked great as I didn't saw any kind of piting as I had on my OE gears.
This may be a lot cheaper to do if you want to.
On the other hand, the Sodemo BTCC engine had billet gears, thinner than the OE ones (less flow), and a reduced oil pressure.

Myself if for NA. Actually any ITBd car owner should be interested, as our cars rev to 7800 by default.
But then I have currently a Z22YH pump installed and another brand new B207 one as spare already. The joy of endless spare parts hoarding...

Any more details on a specific hardening process for the gears?

I do not know the English name of it.
From what I understood, it is done by inclusion of water stem one the part heated at high temperatures
The mates explained it is what is used by OE manufacturers and that is basically almost doubles the surface hardness. I even had the hardness data at the time, but not sure I still have it.

On the Z20LET gear there are 2 issues that I know of:
1. The side of the gear errodes into the side of the housing causing some play.
2. The gear shatters completely into 2 or more bits.
I think nitdriding (or some other surface treatment) would only help with point 1 above, but not with point 2. The whole thing needs to be made stronger to stop it shattering.
