Morning fellas, Was torquing up a new set of TREs last night, and thought something felt a bit weird. Normally when torquing up a taper, it seats 'hard' and the final tourque is pretty solid. These felt 'soft' for want of a better word. Still ultimately torqued to spec, but felt like it was giving too much whilst getting there. An M10 fastener on a taper should bite pretty solidly. Thinking about it over night.... did I get the wrong TREs with some different taper? Ordered as S2 from Elise-Shop. Is there a difference between S2 and S1 Units? Or rather, is there a difference in the taper engagement, or atleast a reason why something would feel odd http://www.elise-sho...x220-p-125.html The other curveball... the steering arm on the upright is from a Tesla Roadster. So far the bits are pretty much 1:1 with a VX/Elise, so never thought that the steering tie rod would be any different. Thanks! Ed

No difference to my knowledge. I've installed S2 ones. Only the exige v6 are different (longer)

I would advise you strip it back down and check the tapers are the same

yep 95% certain its a taper issue, hence the question... i'd always considered the steering tie rod a constant. seems a bit odd that ive been supplied something from a specialist supplier thats way out

I've ordered mine from Seriously Lotus and they list the same part for S1 and S2.

I suggest you check your Tesla steering arms.

Only difference AFAIK originally between S1 and S2 versions was the slightly different shape of the TRE. The S2 versions having a bit of a kinked/offset connection to the balljoint and the S1 being more 'straight' from te shank to the balljoint. Also the portion the threaded rod goes into is a little different in lenght.

As far as I know are the original S1 ones no longer available anyway (like much OEM Lotus bits) from the original supplier, only clones/aftermarket now, and are S2 ones used everywhere.

Tapers should be identical across the board for S1/S2 Elise and VX. Can't really imagine the Tesla having different steering arms with different tapered TRE's.

Dirt on/inside the steering arm holes perhaps?

Bye, Arno.

Nah, everything clean as a whistle. Chris from Jon Sands reckons he's seen some issues with taper fit from aftermarket suppliers. He's sending me x2 Delphi TREs and we'll see if they're different

Problem with the TREs wasn't the taper per se, but the fasteners were made of butter... tightened them down the nut's thread pulled out, hence the soft torque feel. Think the tip of the taper was also coming out the bottom of the steering arm, and the shoulder of the taper was riding into the nut, not helping things, seizing progress of the nut, and gorrnnn
