Would it be weird to get the current geo checked to know where you are?

You should be able to see how many shims you have front and rear for caster.

Is the car on lowered suspension? If so check the rack has the raiser plates fitted.

Thanks Mark, I* will check this out. I know the wishbones have been out so will be interesting to see if they were refitted correctly. Is this the only way to adjust castor? I take it that its the number of shims front/rear that effects the adjustment? *i will get a competent person to check for me :P

Yes and yes thumbsup Edit. AIUI riser plates are to reduce bump steer rather than anything else?

They are but without the plates the steering arms won't be correctly aligned and it may make it slower/harder to get the wheels to turn for the same amount of lock. How fast does the wheel snap back to dead ahead? If it's slow it's probably this, if it snaps back quickly it's probably something geometry related or the wheels/tyre/pressure combo you've already ruled out.

Castor +/- shims on our cars make barely any difference, so you are barking up the wrong tree.

Drop me a call if you want. Think I did the setup on the car. Shouldn't be that, but good points made on no oe/delphi ball joints. If you use anything other than those you get heavy steering and loss of self-centering effect.

Matt

Update:

Sent rack to Titan - they say rack, pinion and bearings are all very worn and need replacing - full refurb cost is about £380 so not much less than a new rack :(

I'm inclined to go for a new rack - Titan one is over £500 but if I don't buy theirs I'll be stung for inspection costs...

What to do?

For that sort of pricing, I'd be tempted to go new - I assume the new one will come with a warranty while the refurb won't?

How much is inspection costs? £380 they make it like new and send it back is the option I would go for. Must come with some form of warranty. How many miles has it done ? If you need to face this cost again

Inspection is £95

Refurb is £375

New std rack is £485

New quick rack is £530

I'm inclined to go for a new rack then flog the old one (or refurb elsewhere and flog)

Car has only done 57k ish.

Seems odd that wear is causing the rack to stiffen up - i have no play. Humm...

Interesting Chris, a good quality rack would be good.

If the super heavy steering is most obvious on track could it be more likely ride height, wheel off set or geo related.

As a side note I have gone from very low ride height and 205 AD08's to Eiback lowering springs & std dampers and 195 NS-2R's and the steering has gone from torture at all speeds especially on track to light (after 40 mph). For most of the last 15 years I have been swimming half a mile a day so my arms are not too weak.

Why not give Mat a call and see if he can point you in the right direction.

Kindly, Paul

I find putting some air in the tyres helps
