Gentlemen You have all kindly helped me with my previous questions! Two more for you. On the overrun my turbo burbles and pops from the exhaust. Do they all do this. Have I got something to fix? Secondly, the ride is pretty harsh. Over quite minor road imperfections, there is a lot of banging and crashing. Again, do they all do this or has a previous owner fitted harder springs? I have Gaz coil overs fitted but have yet to remove them so I can check the spring rates. Any thoughts gratefully received. Thanks again! Paul Gibson

Hi Paul, lots of popping is normal and with an aftermarket exhaust and remap expect more and more. Is it happening to the point of annoyance? Most owners normally want the pops :) Spring rates and if applicable the settings on the damper will dictate the ride quality. Best advice i can think of is to check nothing is obviously wrong like loose wheel arch liners etc, then get s a few passenger rides with other local owners to see how harsh your car is and go from there. Welcome to the site, great cars aren't they!

Hi Paul, Congrarulations on your purchase. Dont forget that there are quite a few lady owners here too. Gentleman is assuming we are all blokes and not many gentlemen either 😊. The pops and burbles are normal. Banging and crashing suggests that you are ready for shocks / springs. As Pete says, see if you can get someone knowledgeable to go for a passenger ride. The car was designed to ride pretty well but if u hit a pot hole it does feel like you have broken the car... Jon

If popping and banging sound like a rally car then you might have a fuelling problem

..its when you get none of those you really start to worry...

Gaz coilover are generally regarded as the poorest in terms of ride quality (they are a step backwards in terms of damper design compared to the standard Bilsteins), and often they are fitted with relatively stiff spring rates which exacerbates the situation. They can be decent on track if that's what the car is mostly used for, but I always found them pretty compromised on the road (plus the VX220 is already a pretty stiff car due to the chassis rigidity).

and the tyres you're using can make a difference to ride quality.

Hi dude,

 

I have Gaz on mine. The ride is not too bad but I changed my springs to much softer than is supplied as std. The springs that came from Gaz were much too stiff for road use.

It would appear I have Gaz gold set up for track, I'm off to BOT on Monday for an overview and potentially some Nitrons. It's very low at the front so they suspect it's got lowering brackets as well. Drive over a manhole cover and it sounds like banging a hammer on a metal post!!

Get some standard Nitron 40's on there with a Full Geo, decent new Tyres and you're sorted.

Thanks to all for thoughts. My plan is to remove the coil overs to check the condition of the dampers and to establish the spring rates. I have a suspicion they will be very high. So, as a first try I am going to then obtain a set of springs almost identical to the standard spring rates and refit to try. Gaz have quote me about £120 for a set of springs. This assumes the dampers are serviceable and the existing Spring rates are indeed high. On the popping and banging during overrun, I've checked the exhaust over for leaks and all is sound. So I'll just monitor that. No fault codes on opcom! Will keep u posted! Kind Regards Paul

Before you get busy with the spanners, maybe worth trying some lo-tech checks. Make sure it's not the windows, they rattle around a smidge and inmy car they are the thing that tends to make the noise over bumps. Also check everything is secured under both bonnets and on the suspension, a loose connector or play in a suspension component could make all sorts of noises. But it won't harm to get the shocks checked over if the spring rates are too high. Does the car feel right on bends and under braking? It should be much firmer than a hatch etc but not rattle your fillings out. The exhaust noises are normal and should be embraced, and encouraged :)
