So far I have the obvious...
Change passwords
Go into apple account and get it locked (If I can remember the password for that)
Go to EE shop and try to retrieve the number
Buy 'new' phone

Seeing as you know where it is, guessing you have Find My iPhone turned on. Log into icloud.com and either lost mode or delete everything if you have resigned to the fact you aren't going to get it back. Did you put a message on the phone in the event of lost mode being triggered?
If you use Apple Pay, you can remove all of the cards on the device when logged into your Apple ID.
Then buy a replacement one.

All I've done is send a text to it saying 'lost from...' so that anyone who presses the button will know where its gone from. The whole 'find my phone' is new to me I'm afraid.

While I will advise you 'do not follow links strangers send you', go to https://www.icloud.com/ and log in using your apple ID. You can then click on the device and force (just like Star Wars) delete everything on it. It won't be usable if it is tied to your apple ID anyway (I think that's the case on a 5). Or, go to the link and make the 'I'm lost' message come up.
It should show you where the phone is. If it's at the taxi depot, you may be able to get them to post it back to you!

Last time I tried to phone it went straight to voice mail so I guess it's flat and lost somewhere. Fingers crossed someone charges it!

Have you checked with the taxi company?

Yeah, called them about 30sec after I got out (hotel reception phone btw!). No sign of it!
