Fitting a better, neater, easier to use, Bonnet opener.
Having suffered for over 16 years with the fragile, annoying, badly routed bonnet pull I finally had enough and did a new one. This job takes around 1 hour or less. Parts under £6.
Buy a Landrover Discovery 1 Bonnet release cable (thanks 5 oclock) Picture 1.

Remove the old bonnet pull that was always hard to get at and fragile. ( I had removed ours previously as, it had locked solid). To do that disconnect (Keep the small end bolt that is on the cable where it connects with the lock under the bonnet.). Get under the dash undo the handle and pull it through.
Fit the new one
Drill a small hole in the door hinge bracket. (Picture 2)
Make a small, strong (so no flex) steel bracket (mine was 20mm x 60 3mm deep) with two holes in (one to mount it on the door hinge and one for the bonnet pull to go through.)
Mount the bonnet pull on the bracket, tighten fully as you don't want to be doing that again, then, feed the wire through to the bonnet lock area. (Picture 3). The route is pretty obvious.
Bolt the bracket onto the door hinge. (I used a bolt that was short in length (M8.8 2cm) so you can get a nut on it easily when on the door hinge bracket.
Measure the new cable. Some of the plastic sleeve may have to be removed as its too long, just use scissors or a sharp knife.
Feed the new cable through the lock and fix it in place using the saved small lock bolt that came off the old cable. I added a tiny washer at the end of the cable sleeve where it meets the lock, as a sort of stopper.
Once tested and working, cut the excess cabling off using pliers or wire cutters.
The new route the cable takes is simpler, straighter and should also be held in place using cable ties to stop movement. The abs unit has handy connection place on its rear side. (Picture 4)
New bonnet opener fitted.
I have pictures but cant get them to load for some reason?
