Jesus. The size and speed of the shockwave from that explosion is unbelievable. God knows what they were storing in the warehouse that exploded; it's a wonder anybody near that survived.

Not a chance in hell of that being a fireworks factory, that shock wave and mushroom cloud looked like something from
Hiroshima !! Thoughts are with all the casualties there will probably be thousands more by the morning :-(

2750 tons of ammonium nitrate would do it.

I've heard various stories on this.  Fireworks, fertiliser and US/Israel military strike.  Whatever it was it was big.  I'm not sure what regulation etc is like in  Beirut but the fact that this has happened is rather scary.

I believe it has been confirmed as the Nitrate.  It reminds me of the nightmare scenario of an LNG container ship going boom in the docks in the UK. That would be an even larger and more violent explosion.

Although I am sure the usual tinderweb conspiracy theorists will live off this for years....

Trump straight in there saying its likely to be a bomb, with no evidence of such, as usual. What an utter prat that man is. Seeing the videos it is horrifying though, it is like a nuclear explosion and imagine the death toll will double at least once they clear through the carnage. Poor people.

I spent a lot of time at the Container terminal at the Port in Beirut back in 2011/12 /13 whilst out in Saudi developing King Abdullah Port. Beirut is a great city but, casualties apart which is always tragic, this is really going to hurt the city.

We've had five staff / family members injured there. Two hospitalised but thankfully not life threatening. But all our staff properties out there suffered significant damage including our office building as they all lived in the area around the port. Truly shocking event.
