I just picked up an exceptionally cheap set of wheels with the aim of fitting Uniroyal Rainsports for wet track use.  I'm wondering if I can get away with 205/45 17 on the front. I've used a tyre size calculator and the effective diameter is very similar (1961mm v 1935mm).  I know the profile might not be ideal but I'm not sure it'll be so critical for wet tyres?  Will it work?

I've decided to go down the route of fitting rear wheels to the front.  I've picked up another wheel (so I have 3 rears now).  I'll grab a fourth and then I can get wets ready for when the weather eventually turns.

Won't you struggle with clearance?

I've searched on the forum and people said they've managed to use rears on the front with 205/45/17 tyres without rubbing.  I've compared the stock front v rear on a tyre fit calculator (screenshot below).  If I'm right about the offset values, at worst I'd need a spacer for the front wheels.  The outer diameter is the same and it'll sit 3cm nearer the suspension strut, but that's the same width as the speedline 16 wheel/tyre I currently have, so I can see how it would fit.

I used to run 205/45 17s on the front on the existing front rims without problem.  Whatever your rim width you can usually go two tyre sizes larger or smaller without problems other than possible rubbing.  205 on a 225 rim is two sizes smaller  Using a rear rim simply adds the extra problem of an oversize rim.

I just trial fitted a rear with the stock 225/45 tyre on the front before I fully commit. It fitted fine and only rubbed at full lock in one direction. Otherwise it had similar clearance to my 16" speedline wheel. So it should be fine with a 205 tyre, at worst it'll need a 5mm wheel spacer.
