So I’ve patiently been waiting most of this year in the hope that I’d stumble Ona crappy VX in order to strip it and build the RENN550. A carbon bodied, Porsche 550 silhouette, with an aircooled 911 engine.

It needs to be august 2002 or earlier in order to get it road legal.

Patience hasn’t served me well so if you’re reading this and have a bit of a snotter and wondering what to do with it, please feel free to DM me. Ideally it would move under its own steam and be road legal but it’s not a dealbreaker assuming the price is taken in to consideration.

Hope this is ok to post!

They come up occasionally on the Facebook site, depending on budget

Thanks chaps. I’m in touch with the chap that has that bare chassis but unfortunately by the time you add suspension, steering and a few other usable bits, it’s just as expensive as a running car.

I’m on the facebook group. There was one that I missed last week for £5500! A non-runner but low mileage. That would have been perfect. They do pop up from time to time where they’ve been dragged out of a dank garage.

That was the hope with this post, that it would reach someone teetering on the brink and catch them before they post it for sale.

Someone did post one just recently on FB, had sat for 10, years or so, non starter and was asking £5500.

Can't seem to find it now, could probably have broke the car into more than that.

Although surely a Boxster or something might be more suited ?

Here's another odd one, someone's already altered it, probably not worth for what you're doing ?

Wrong way around for me :) I need the car not the engine (or bodywork particularly).

That was the one I missed by 45 minutes. I nearly threw my Mac across the room. I’d have had it in a heartbeat. Absolutely perfect for me.

Boxster no. The dimensions of an M111 are almost bang on for a 550. Plus… better! I still think after 20 years plus of being around Elise platform cars that there is little to beat it in terms of handling. Plus they’re not compromised by not having a rigid top half. A Box would be a disaster to try and make stuff again.

Surely removing the steel roll bar and rear bars would compromise the chassis to some degree ?

Or would you be retaining these with the new build for safety ?

Must admit...would be nice if someone made a Stratos body for one

The strength comes from the bonded aluminium chassis and not the roll over hoops. A custom one would be made to match the speed hump for the driver only.

I think there are a few options for what the M111 chassis could support!
