My car needs a new engine. The listings on eBay state auto / manual when searching for the z22se.
Is there a difference in the block? Or is it only the gearbox it's mated to?
Am I right in saying the 'auto' will fix the VX just fine?

Shouldn't matter. You'll swap your flywheel over anyway

But I have always wondered what an automatic vx220 would be like, especially a modern box with lots of ratios.

No difference in the engine - all the specs, ancillaries and the actual block are the same regardless of the transmission.
But I have always wondered what an automatic vx220 would be like, especially a modern box with lots of ratios.
Some have done a DSG on the platform. Cost wise it could be a good option in lieu of a mechanical sequential, but it'd be aa tight squeeze, and no doubt require some cutting of metal.
It'd certainly be easier if already running a matching VW/Audi engine
But the old F23 ain't that bad really.

No logical sense to go DSG and not just use the 2.0 s3 lump imo. Although management gets more complicated/£ v going manual and custom map of oem vag ecu
Just for reference the 5 pot tfsi (Rs3/ttrs etc) does not fit with the DQ500 (with transfer removed also)

I wouldn't see any point using the 500, the 250 would be more than adequate.
I'd agree, using a matching engine so it bolts directly and easily to, the DSG makes a lot of sense, although it also depends if you're in a racing class where such things matter.
The Ecotec platform does use an auto box in the US, and I've even seen that some people using them for some types of racing....no idea what it'd be like to drive though. I doubt it'd be that inspiring, but you never know

I used the DQ500 as the strongest version and converted to 2wd
Plenty of upgrades for lesser versions mind

I think the quickest FWD drag car for a good while was on a DQ250

So clearly it is pretty strong.
I had considered such a swap, but it would just cause more hassle than it'd be worth for the sprint and hillclimb classes. Plus in reality, most sprints etc I mostly only end up using 2nd and 3rd, occasionally 4th anyway.
So it did seem a rather pointless idea.

250 is not weak, just off the shelf there are better options, it can get expensive to upgrade to handle the power/abuse
